This is one of two Kelley MBA Academies that focuses on finance careers.

Capital Markets Academy experience

Description of the video:

Jim Laudette:
Capital Markets Academy is just a meeting of the minds. It's professionals coming in talking to you about how to network, so it can kind of direct your career as well as learning intricate skills like financial modeling.

Rebecca Cook:
Usually we start our day discussing the markets, talk about really what's going on in the space. And this is important because a lot of times in interviews the students are asked, "What deals are happening? What's going on in the markets?" So they need to know these things. We spend a lot of time doing financial modeling. It's a skill set that they actually need to be very good at to be successful in the industry.

Jim Laudette:
We actually had alum that is probably the most talented modeler I've ever met or seen, and he literally came and almost went cell by cell and really just showed everyone the link between the three financial statements.

Rebecca Cook:
We get a lot of training through a program called Training the Street, which is actually what Wall Street uses to train their analysts. We also spend a week in Chicago and New York, where I try to expose the students to all different types of companies. Investment management, investment banking, and private wealth to expand their knowledge and expand their network.

Jim Laudette:
The highlight of my Academy experience would be Academy Week. We went to Chicago and New York, that we met with a ton of people.

Rebecca Cook:
The Capital Markets Academy relies on networking. The financial industry, specifically an investment industry, actually is very small. So being able to network is significantly important.

Jim Laudette:
We're not in New York, we're not in San Francisco, and the alumni really understand that. They get that it's hard to network and that a lot of it is going to be off-campus. So they're very receptive to emails, calls, and I've made a lot of very strong connections with these people that I'll be friends with them for the rest of my life.
