Adding or dropping a class is done in various ways, depending on the time of year. Please pay close attention to when you are attempting to make changes to your schedule, as well as the “W" deadline for dropping a course. After the start of the semester “BUS” courses are not eligible for Late Add, with the exception of second-eight week business classes.

- If you initiated a drop/add as a pair, in preparation for the full-term "W" deadline, and the add was denied:
- Look for an email from the Office of the Registrar with further instructions or go to Student Central on Union for additional help.
- Look for messages regarding the pair in the View SIS eDocs app by clicking on the transaction number.
- The department might have suggested a different section for you, or be waiting on additional information from you.
- Note: an advisor is not able to see this information. If you come to the office for this question, please bring your laptop.
- Continue attending the class you were wanting to drop until it is no longer on your schedule of classes.
- Note: Kelley does not accept late withdrawals if you missed the deadline.
After the auto-W deadline, but before the Dean's deadline, students may only drop a course due to compelling circumstances. The student must first meet with a Kelley advisor to discuss their late drop petition and see if a petition is absolutely necessary and the likelihood of the late drop being approved.
- If the advisor and student decide to move forward with a late drop petition, the advisor will grant the student access to the Petition for Academic Exception form.
- Within the form, the student must write a clear petition essay, free of grammatical errors. The petition essay must contain:
- A detailed description of the extenuating circumstance surrounding this late drop petition. Please note that the description should include why this extenuating circumstance is only affecting certain courses but not all courses.
- Any documentation to support the petition. Official documentation describing and substantiating the particulars of specific circumstances will greatly strengthen a petition.
- The decision regarding a student’s petition will be communicated to the student via their IU email account. All petition decisions are final.
- If the petition is denied, the petition cannot overridden at another level.
- If the petition is approved by the Kelley Petitions Committee, the course instructor(s) still has the right to deny the late drop.
