About the Course

Students will earn 3 credits of BUS-D 496 Foreign Study in Business. The course, titled The Business, Political, and Cultural Environment in Europe, will apply as elective credit for the International Business co-major. The program will not satisfy the IUB General Education World Languages and Cultures requirement.

The course begins with a discussion of the political and economic environment of the European Union, focusing on the European Economic and Monetary Union and its business implications. Students will look at specific problems of the new EU member countries in Central and Eastern Europe, which were socialist economies prior to the fall of the Iron Curtain. We will evaluate strategic business issues in an international context and subsequently turn to specific business functions and topics, including marketing and finance in Europe.

Participating students work on cases and, throughout the three-week course, work in groups on a small project that will be presented in class at the end of the Summer Institute. The program integrates teaching and coursework, supported by company visits and input from practitioners.

An airport pick-up is organized for students arriving the morning of May 25 at the Frankfurt Airport. There will also be an airport transfer that returns students to the airport after the program is over on Saturday, June 14.
