Operations management major

This major examines organizational processes using readily available and practical analytical tools, and is intended for students who are interested in managing the operations of complex, computer-integrated firms, such as manufacturing companies, multibranch banking, retail chains, international assembly plants, and distribution centers. Students will take courses in operations planning and control, purchasing, manufacturing systems, financial accounting, corporate strategy and governance, database management, decision support (mathematical modeling) systems, business marketing, distribution management, organizational design and change, and operations management.

What are your career possibilities?

Options include direct supervision positions or staff positions in specialties such as operations, logistics, materials management, and quality assurance. Consulting firms regularly recruit individuals with strong production/operations management capabilities to work in such areas as process re-engineering and computer-based inventory systems. In addition, job opportunities as buyers, inventory planners, and material planners exist in manufacturing and service industries.

Are you interested in the tangible nature of getting products to customers? Do you have strong communication skills and an awareness of the world? Do you consider yourself a spreadsheet guru? If so, operations management may be for you. Learn more about the courses in the operations management degree track.
