Learning In Person

Build connections in person during Kelley On Campus and Kelley On Location

If you are pursuing an online MBA, your education will include two in-person sessions built into the beginning and end of your program:

  • Kelley On Campus is an intensive introduction to the Kelley Direct program, held on Indiana University’s beautiful Bloomington campus
  • Held during your second year of the program, Kelley On Location enables you to take a deep dive into an industry, geographic region, or emerging challenge shaping today's business landscape

During both sessions, you will build lifelong connections and discover new pathways and opportunities for your future. Kelley On Campus and Kelley On Location experiences are part of the Kelley Direct curriculum and are required for graduation.

Kelley On Campus connected me to my fellow students, who are so diverse in where they live or have come from, and the work they do. The connections I’ve made with my classmates during these experiences are ones that I will take with me for years to come.

Jenica Acome, MBA’20

Meeting my classmates in person made the online classes so much better. We would get to see each other via Zoom video conferencing, and chat about work or family. It made the online program feel like it was not online, and that was incredible.

Carrie Hoefer, MBA’19

One of the most rewarding aspects of any MBA program is the opportunity to network with your peers. While the Kelley Direct program is taught online, there are an abundance of opportunities for students to build personal connections with both current students and alumni.

Joseph Hwalek, MBA’19

Online MBA program, authentic connections

In this video, Kelley Direct Online MBA students share how they create real connections within the top-ranked program. The students were interviewed during Kelley On Location: Chicago, an in-person experience for second-year MBA students.

Description of the video:

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:02,502
(piano music)

2
00:00:11,136 --> 00:00:12,762
- The great thing about Kelley Connect

3
00:00:12,762 --> 00:00:13,847
and Kelley Direct Program is

4
00:00:13,847 --> 00:00:16,516
almost everyone in the
program already has a job.

5
00:00:16,516 --> 00:00:19,811
- There's a lot of limitations
of my time availability.

6
00:00:19,811 --> 00:00:22,355
- I don't know where we're
going to be next year this time,

7
00:00:22,355 --> 00:00:24,816
so the online program definitely offers

8
00:00:24,816 --> 00:00:26,818
that flexibility factor.

9
00:00:29,028 --> 00:00:31,740
- Hi, I'm John Byrne,
with Poets and Quants.

10
00:00:31,740 --> 00:00:33,491
Welcome to the Kelley School of Business

11
00:00:33,491 --> 00:00:35,326
at Indiana University.

12
00:00:35,326 --> 00:00:36,661
We're here for a special week,

13
00:00:36,661 --> 00:00:39,205
it's called Kelley Connect Week.

14
00:00:39,205 --> 00:00:43,126
It's when online MBA students
converge on the campus.

15
00:00:43,126 --> 00:00:45,003
Bonding occurs, case studies,

16
00:00:45,003 --> 00:00:48,131
presentations to company executives.

17
00:00:48,131 --> 00:00:49,632
And we're gonna give you
a little bit of sense

18
00:00:49,632 --> 00:00:51,217
of who the students are,

19
00:00:51,217 --> 00:00:54,596
and what they are in fact
experiencing in this program.

20
00:00:54,596 --> 00:00:56,181
Let's go meet some.

21
00:00:57,265 --> 00:00:59,017
- Pita J. Cruz, right?

22
00:00:59,017 --> 00:01:01,102
- Yes, you got it
perfectly, I'm impressed.

23
00:01:01,102 --> 00:01:03,521
- And Zach, you're
based in Chicago, right?

24
00:01:03,521 --> 00:01:05,064
- Right, Washington, DC.

25
00:01:05,064 --> 00:01:06,274
- Why do you want an MBA?

26
00:01:06,274 --> 00:01:07,942
- I didn't want my brain to stagnate.

27
00:01:07,942 --> 00:01:11,362
I wanted to keep getting
better outside of my own job.

28
00:01:11,362 --> 00:01:15,408
- To work with real small
business, not a made up case.

29
00:01:15,408 --> 00:01:17,243
- You can actually do something to impact

30
00:01:17,243 --> 00:01:20,747
small businesses in America,
and make a difference.

31
00:01:20,747 --> 00:01:22,248
- To take an online program,

32
00:01:22,248 --> 00:01:23,666
and bring it back to the real world,

33
00:01:23,666 --> 00:01:26,878
it's using today's technology
and tradition learning

34
00:01:26,878 --> 00:01:28,963
and really fusing them into something new.

35
00:01:28,963 --> 00:01:31,508
- Now, obviously we're on the campus

36
00:01:31,508 --> 00:01:33,843
of Indiana University in Bloomington.

37
00:01:33,843 --> 00:01:35,929
But much of your study,
in fact most of it,

38
00:01:35,929 --> 00:01:38,556
is online in the virtual world.

39
00:01:38,556 --> 00:01:41,559
So what is it like to learn online

40
00:01:41,559 --> 00:01:45,396
and to work with other
students all over the world

41
00:01:45,396 --> 00:01:49,150
when you're not really there
in a classroom setting?

42
00:01:49,150 --> 00:01:51,194
- In terms of classmates, I'm next to

43
00:01:51,194 --> 00:01:54,739
and entrepreneur and an
astrophysicist with a PhD.

44
00:01:54,739 --> 00:01:56,908
And everyone's working
towards the same goal.

45
00:01:56,908 --> 00:01:59,077
And just because you're
virtually in a classroom

46
00:01:59,077 --> 00:02:00,745
and it's over conference calls,

47
00:02:00,745 --> 00:02:02,539
you still get that mentality of a team.

48
00:02:02,539 --> 00:02:04,707
You still get that drive to really push

49
00:02:04,707 --> 00:02:06,084
and be better every time.

50
00:02:06,084 --> 00:02:08,127
- When you actually go
out to the business world,

51
00:02:08,127 --> 00:02:09,796
so much of that is virtual now.

52
00:02:09,796 --> 00:02:12,132
So, in a lot of cases,
you're not all meeting

53
00:02:12,132 --> 00:02:13,466
together in a conference room.

54
00:02:13,466 --> 00:02:15,134
You're meeting with people
from all over the country

55
00:02:15,134 --> 00:02:16,970
and then having that experience,

56
00:02:16,970 --> 00:02:18,680
doing that in your online MBA program,

57
00:02:18,680 --> 00:02:20,306
I think really helps you.

58
00:02:20,306 --> 00:02:23,977
It not seem so strange to
work with people remotely.

59
00:02:23,977 --> 00:02:25,728
- Thank God for mobile technology.

60
00:02:25,728 --> 00:02:27,689
(laughter)

61
00:02:27,689 --> 00:02:29,274
- We have an opportunity for you to engage

62
00:02:29,274 --> 00:02:32,902
young Chinese consumers
in an innovative way.

63
00:02:32,902 --> 00:02:36,739
You do a week of very intensive coursework

64
00:02:36,739 --> 00:02:40,368
while simultaneously doing
a very competitive case

65
00:02:40,368 --> 00:02:43,788
along with colleagues that are fantastic.

66
00:02:44,956 --> 00:02:46,833
- So having spent some time in China,

67
00:02:46,833 --> 00:02:50,003
I understand the vast risks
that a lot of businesses face.

68
00:02:50,003 --> 00:02:51,754
This year I was much more at ease,

69
00:02:51,754 --> 00:02:55,633
and much more comfortable with
the presentation as whole.

70
00:02:55,633 --> 00:02:57,302
- It's been a wonderful experience.

71
00:02:57,302 --> 00:03:00,972
It's been able to kind of
look at a real business idea,

72
00:03:00,972 --> 00:03:02,765
and look at a real business company,

73
00:03:02,765 --> 00:03:05,476
and see the problems that they're facing.

74
00:03:05,476 --> 00:03:07,812
And being able to address those problems.

75
00:03:07,812 --> 00:03:09,188
- Accounting is accounting.

76
00:03:09,188 --> 00:03:11,482
It doesn't matter what text
book you get it out from.

77
00:03:11,482 --> 00:03:13,526
But this is a program
that offers so much more

78
00:03:13,526 --> 00:03:16,779
in terms of flexibility,
faculty, classmates.

79
00:03:16,779 --> 00:03:18,823
- They really work to expose us to

80
00:03:18,823 --> 00:03:21,951
a wide variety of educational experiences.

81
00:03:21,951 --> 00:03:23,453
- They didn't want MBA answers,

82
00:03:23,453 --> 00:03:25,079
they wanted some more creativity.

83
00:03:25,079 --> 00:03:26,372
They wanted us to think about things

84
00:03:26,372 --> 00:03:28,458
that have never been done before.

85
00:03:28,458 --> 00:03:30,335
- How did you find the
quality of the faculty,

86
00:03:30,335 --> 00:03:32,378
and their dedication to the program?

87
00:03:32,378 --> 00:03:34,756
- It's amazing, they're
not only professionals

88
00:03:34,756 --> 00:03:36,591
and great how they are as teachers,

89
00:03:36,591 --> 00:03:38,426
they're great online teachers.

90
00:03:38,426 --> 00:03:42,096
- I've worked with over 10
or 12 various professors

91
00:03:42,096 --> 00:03:43,556
from the in residence program,

92
00:03:43,556 --> 00:03:45,308
and that's something you don't get

93
00:03:45,308 --> 00:03:48,186
in a lot of other online programs.

94
00:03:48,186 --> 00:03:50,647
(piano music)

95
00:03:52,649 --> 00:03:54,525
- What are you gonna do with
your MBA when you get it?

96
00:03:54,525 --> 00:03:56,402
- What am I gonna do with this MBA?

97
00:03:56,402 --> 00:03:57,946
I think it's whatever I want to do.

98
00:03:57,946 --> 00:04:02,075
- It just opens up so much
once you get that degree.

99
00:04:02,075 --> 00:04:03,952
- And how long, start to finish,

100
00:04:03,952 --> 00:04:06,412
will it have taken you to get the MBA?

101
00:04:06,412 --> 00:04:08,790
- I was able to finish
in less than two years.

102
00:04:08,790 --> 00:04:10,959
- Don't put off doing it. Get into it.

103
00:04:10,959 --> 00:04:12,752
Get it done. Get a lot out of it

104
00:04:12,752 --> 00:04:15,755
and you'll have your entire
life to reap the benefits of it.

105
00:04:15,755 --> 00:04:18,383
- Great. Well listen, thank you so much.

106
00:04:18,383 --> 00:04:19,926
Good luck to all of you.

107
00:04:19,926 --> 00:04:22,637
You are at the start of
a magnificent adventure.

108
00:04:22,637 --> 00:04:25,056
You're already taken care of with a job.

109
00:04:25,056 --> 00:04:27,684
Unilever's gonna give you a big promotion.

110
00:04:27,684 --> 00:04:29,978
You're gonna go off on your
honeymoon with an MBA, right?

111
00:04:29,978 --> 00:04:30,812
- That's right.

112
00:04:30,812 --> 00:04:32,772
- Did your wife require that of you?

113
00:04:32,772 --> 00:04:34,524
(laughter)

114
00:04:34,524 --> 00:04:36,609
Good luck to you, and thank
you for participating.

115
00:04:36,609 --> 00:04:38,194
- Thank you very much, John.

116
00:04:38,194 --> 00:04:40,321
- This is John Byrne with Poets and Quants

117
00:04:40,321 --> 00:04:43,074
at the Kelley School of
Business at Indiana University

118
00:04:43,074 --> 00:04:46,077
on the Bloomington, Indiana campus.

119
00:04:46,077 --> 00:04:47,996
Thanks for watching.

120
00:04:47,996 --> 00:04:50,498
(piano music)
