Technology requirements for Online MBA students

Hardware

A personal computer—desktop or laptop—and a webcam are required for students in Kelley programs that are delivered online. You also may need to install software on your laptop for use in various classes and will need to have administrator rights in that machine. The minimum and recommended hardware specifications follow:

MinimumRecommended
  • Intel Core 2 Duo (2.2 GHz or higher)
  • 4.0 GB RAM
  • 120 GB Hard drive
  • Wireless card (802.11b/g)
  • Speakers or Headphones
  • 1.3 Megapixel webcam (640x480 minimum resolution)
  • I3 2.5GHZ dual core or equivalent
  • 8.0 GB RAM
  • 240 GB+ Hard drive
  • Ethernet card
  • Wireless (802.11g/n)
  • Headset with microphone

Purchasing a new computer? Be sure to get the most up-to-date options in your system. Do some research to find the best computer and support options to meet both Kelley’s technical requirements and your personal needs. Indiana University has special computer deals available to students.

Tablets like the iPad can be used for some portions of the program, but not all. A personal computer remains necessary to complete your online coursework.

Notice to Mac users:

Ideally a computer that is able to run Windows programs is best. Regarding Macs, a current generation MacBook may be used with certain limitations. If you already own a capable Mac, it is highly recommended that you use Bootcamp to install Windows 10x64. Instructions are available here. Some of the software that is required for use in class may not run on Macs or Mac versions of software may have compatibility issues with instructional materials. Some of the required software is available on IUanyWare, but not all required software may be available in the virtualized environment.

Software

The following software—most available via free download—is required for Kelley coursework:

  • Microsoft Office 2013 (PC), 2016 (PC or Mac), or 365 (free through Indiana University)
  • Windows Media Player, Apple QuickTime, or VLC Media Player
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • One or more of the following web browsers:
    Internet Explorer 11 or newer
    Mozilla Firefox
    Google Chrome
    Apple Safari

Certain courses may require other programs, such as Microsoft Excel plug-ins (stat tools, Risk). Check with your instructors before the start of each term to find out what software is required for the course.

Free or low-cost software through Indiana University’s license agreements

Offerings include anti-virus software, graphic design suites, web development programs, citation management software, statistical analysis programs, and more. Take advantage of these great software deals:

  • Free downloads from IUware Online. IUware requires your IU Network ID and passphrase. Not all software is available online; availability based on enrollment status.
  • Purchase options through the IUware Off-Campus Software Purchasing.

Internet connection

Required: A high-speed broadband Internet connection (such as DSL or cable internet service). Dial-up modem connections won’t work for any Kelley Direct program.
