    Capstone Project

Photographed from above, Kelley students take on real challenges with partnering companies in the MSiS Capstone project.

Gain real-world expertise to become an information systems leader

Take a deep dive to solve an actual business challenge with the MS in Information Systems Capstone Project (BUS-S546). It’s an opportunity to put into practice all you’ve learned in the MSIS program and get firsthand business experience collaborating with a corporate partner.

What benefits of experiential learning are unique to the Kelley MSIS degree?

The knowledge you gain through the MSIS program and the Capstone Project prepares you to add value to any organization on day one. A key component of the MSIS degree, this one-semester team project will develop your ability to:

    • Consult with a corporate client to address a business challenge
    • Design and build a system to provide your client with solutions
    • Engage in all the cycles of typical system development
    • Interview client personnel and potential system users
    • Conduct market research
    • Develop a system design that includes a human interface component
    • Translate client needs into a requirements document
    • Build a working prototype appropriate for implementation and testing

See how MSIS students are developing fundamental skills through real work for top companies

MSIS students, Kelley faculty, and employers talk about the value of the MSIS Capstone Project and how it transforms a student’s career readiness.

    Description of the video:

WEBVTT 1 00:00:01.620 --> 00:00:05.149 [MUSIC] [KATELIN CORNELL] The greatest value of the MSIS capstone project is getting the 2 00:00:05.240 --> 00:00:07.400 opportunity to work with prestigious companies. 3 00:00:07.440 --> 00:00:11.120 We're able to not only get information about new and upcoming technologies, 4 00:00:11.400 --> 00:00:13.900 but also test our skills in a real-world setting. 5 00:00:14.280 --> 00:00:18.160 [ALEX LOPES] The MSIS students, during the capstone projects, they work with major 6 00:00:18.200 --> 00:00:21.580 companies. Capstone projects in the MSIS program 7 00:00:21.960 --> 00:00:25.620 are real work for real companies. There is no make-believe 8 00:00:25.680 --> 00:00:29.300 work. In the program, you're going to be developing both hard skills, 9 00:00:29.460 --> 00:00:31.480 technical skills, but also soft skills. 10 00:00:31.950 --> 00:00:35.800 And those soft skills for your future career are fundamental, because it's an 11 00:00:35.860 --> 00:00:39.660 opportunity for you to engage with the clients and make 12 00:00:39.760 --> 00:00:43.660 sure that you are able to succeed. It's a great opportunity for our students to 13 00:00:43.720 --> 00:00:47.460 learn in practice what they are going to be facing in their 14 00:00:47.520 --> 00:00:51.420 future professional opportunities, and really bring this value 15 00:00:51.860 --> 00:00:55.440 not only to the companies, but to the students themselves so they can develop 16 00:00:55.460 --> 00:00:58.860 professionally and have a brilliant career ahead of them. 17 00:00:58.900 --> 00:01:02.690 [SIDHI PANDITA] A lot of the students work with companies that they'll end up working 18 00:01:02.720 --> 00:01:06.450 with in the future, and the students work exactly as 19 00:01:06.480 --> 00:01:08.970 how we would work on a typical project with a client. 20 00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:13.170 So they're getting a pre-exposure to this way of working and this nature of 21 00:01:13.200 --> 00:01:15.200 work before they even start their job. 22 00:01:15.240 --> 00:01:18.800 So whatever the students come up with is something that we do leverage inside the 23 00:01:18.840 --> 00:01:22.820 firm. The whole point of making the students do all this is to let them 24 00:01:22.860 --> 00:01:26.640 get familiar with consulting way of doing projects, let them know 25 00:01:26.680 --> 00:01:30.640 what kind of areas the companies are focusing on, and 26 00:01:30.660 --> 00:01:34.380 what can really be an area of technology that their future 27 00:01:34.440 --> 00:01:36.140 employer would probably focus on. 28 00:01:36.400 --> 00:01:40.210 [KEVIN EIDEN] EY likes to work with MSIS students because it allows us 29 00:01:40.260 --> 00:01:42.000 to engage with the student community. 30 00:01:42.240 --> 00:01:45.840 It gives us an opportunity to show the students who we are 31 00:01:46.220 --> 00:01:50.010 as a firm and the value that we can offer from a career perspective, and determine 32 00:01:50.080 --> 00:01:53.400 overall fit before people make a choice on who they want to work for. 33 00:01:53.960 --> 00:01:57.560 The program provides a great business/IT combination perspective. 34 00:01:57.780 --> 00:02:00.940 You really know what you're going to get, which is high-quality work products, good 35 00:02:00.960 --> 00:02:03.950 balanced understanding of technology investment with business 36 00:02:04.020 --> 00:02:07.540 priorities, and a drive to succeed and do well. 37 00:02:07.580 --> 00:02:10.741 [JIM COOPER] We can go to any place on the planet and get 38 00:02:11.460 --> 00:02:15.360 computer science from a computer science point of view, but there's very 39 00:02:15.460 --> 00:02:19.340 few places where we get MSIS from a business school point of view. 40 00:02:19.769 --> 00:02:22.240 And we really like engaging the students. 41 00:02:22.420 --> 00:02:25.769 We give them real projects and topics that we're 42 00:02:25.800 --> 00:02:29.760 pondering for creating services around in the future. 43 00:02:29.980 --> 00:02:33.560 [SAVVY GONSALVES] Our program is training us to be individuals who can go out to companies, who can 44 00:02:33.600 --> 00:02:36.560 go out to clients, and help them develop their projects better. 45 00:02:36.590 --> 00:02:40.400 And this is the perfect way for us to actually go out into the industry, 46 00:02:40.480 --> 00:02:42.880 work with a real-world client, solve their problem. 47 00:02:43.260 --> 00:02:45.780 So that's why this project is really important to us.
