    WEBVTT 1 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.850 align:middle line:90% 2 00:00:01.850 --> 00:00:04.100 align:middle line:84% I'm a career switcher from professional baseball. 3 00:00:04.100 --> 00:00:07.460 align:middle line:84% I came into Kelley with no business experience, 4 00:00:07.460 --> 00:00:09.740 align:middle line:84% and decided to choose the Supply Chain Academy. 5 00:00:09.740 --> 00:00:11.610 align:middle line:84% I was working a lot in marketing, 6 00:00:11.610 --> 00:00:14.000 align:middle line:84% business development with Chinese factories, 7 00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:15.510 align:middle line:90% and it was just really chaotic. 8 00:00:15.510 --> 00:00:17.240 align:middle line:84% And so that really led me to wanting 9 00:00:17.240 --> 00:00:19.250 align:middle line:84% to come to get my MBA at Kelley, really, 10 00:00:19.250 --> 00:00:21.230 align:middle line:84% to answer these questions that I had about, 11 00:00:21.230 --> 00:00:24.050 align:middle line:84% what is good management and how could we really make 12 00:00:24.050 --> 00:00:25.580 align:middle line:90% the most out of the factories? 13 00:00:25.580 --> 00:00:27.710 align:middle line:84% Every organization, every enterprise 14 00:00:27.710 --> 00:00:30.260 align:middle line:84% has operations and an a supply chain. 15 00:00:30.260 --> 00:00:33.260 align:middle line:84% The foundational knowledge that you gain with the supply chain 16 00:00:33.260 --> 00:00:36.950 align:middle line:84% and operations education applies to anything that you do. 17 00:00:36.950 --> 00:00:38.780 align:middle line:84% The world is made up of processes. 18 00:00:38.780 --> 00:00:41.900 align:middle line:84% We've placed students from automotive, manufacturing, life 19 00:00:41.900 --> 00:00:44.120 align:middle line:90% sciences, services, consulting. 20 00:00:44.120 --> 00:00:48.600 align:middle line:84% We try to understand each student's story leading 21 00:00:48.600 --> 00:00:50.600 align:middle line:84% into the program, what they're trying to get out 22 00:00:50.600 --> 00:00:52.933 align:middle line:84% of the program, and what they see themselves doing later 23 00:00:52.933 --> 00:00:55.340 align:middle line:84% down the road and try to kind of match those 24 00:00:55.340 --> 00:00:57.770 align:middle line:84% to some of the folks that we know are out in the world now 25 00:00:57.770 --> 00:01:00.062 align:middle line:84% practicing the things that they learned in the program. 26 00:01:00.062 --> 00:01:01.820 align:middle line:84% The first semester, they bring in speakers 27 00:01:01.820 --> 00:01:03.350 align:middle line:84% and they bring in industry experts, 28 00:01:03.350 --> 00:01:07.100 align:middle line:84% where we're able to do hands on exercises and activities. 29 00:01:07.100 --> 00:01:09.140 align:middle line:84% The Transportation Executive Board 30 00:01:09.140 --> 00:01:11.870 align:middle line:84% is really a collection of professionals 31 00:01:11.870 --> 00:01:14.090 align:middle line:84% that are in the supply chain industry that 32 00:01:14.090 --> 00:01:16.490 align:middle line:84% have all graduated from Indiana University Kelley 33 00:01:16.490 --> 00:01:19.850 align:middle line:84% School of Business, and have an allegiance to the school, 34 00:01:19.850 --> 00:01:22.440 align:middle line:84% but also an allegiance to the industry. 35 00:01:22.440 --> 00:01:24.890 align:middle line:84% This will provide value to the students at Kelley. 36 00:01:24.890 --> 00:01:26.630 align:middle line:84% It's a great networking opportunity. 37 00:01:26.630 --> 00:01:28.400 align:middle line:84% We're going to provide good funding. 38 00:01:28.400 --> 00:01:30.410 align:middle line:84% The executive board's goal is to be 39 00:01:30.410 --> 00:01:35.000 align:middle line:84% able to seek out students that are interested in supply chain, 40 00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:38.690 align:middle line:84% and engage them in internships and also learning opportunities 41 00:01:38.690 --> 00:01:41.690 align:middle line:84% through special projects while they're here at school. 42 00:01:41.690 --> 00:01:43.940 align:middle line:84% We are really excited about the Transportation Board 43 00:01:43.940 --> 00:01:47.875 align:middle line:84% because we can bring to students a lot of real world experience. 44 00:01:47.875 --> 00:01:50.000 align:middle line:84% Because we're not just talking about putting people 45 00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:51.920 align:middle line:84% in and saying, hey, stay middle management. 46 00:01:51.920 --> 00:01:53.610 align:middle line:84% That's not what we're looking for. 47 00:01:53.610 --> 00:01:56.420 align:middle line:84% We're looking at trying to develop leaders out there. 48 00:01:56.420 --> 00:01:58.853 align:middle line:84% We want to know who that next CEO is going to be. 49 00:01:58.853 --> 00:02:01.520 align:middle line:84% The firsthand experience and the firsthand interaction, I think, 50 00:02:01.520 --> 00:02:02.930 align:middle line:84% is what makes all the difference. 51 00:02:02.930 --> 00:02:06.020 align:middle line:84% When a student walks away from an academy event, 52 00:02:06.020 --> 00:02:08.070 align:middle line:84% we like them to not just say, hey, 53 00:02:08.070 --> 00:02:10.220 align:middle line:84% I learned something really cool, but I 54 00:02:10.220 --> 00:02:15.200 align:middle line:84% saw something really cool, or I engaged somehow in a problem 55 00:02:15.200 --> 00:02:17.120 align:middle line:84% and I took away not just the knowledge, 56 00:02:17.120 --> 00:02:18.650 align:middle line:84% but some kind of insight or wisdom 57 00:02:18.650 --> 00:02:19.940 align:middle line:90% associated with that problem. 58 00:02:19.940 --> 00:02:22.670 align:middle line:84% They immerse you into the content and the details 59 00:02:22.670 --> 00:02:23.750 align:middle line:90% right away. 60 00:02:23.750 --> 00:02:26.150 align:middle line:84% You really gain immediate exposure 61 00:02:26.150 --> 00:02:28.970 align:middle line:84% to all the possibilities within that industry. 62 00:02:28.970 --> 00:02:31.640 align:middle line:84% You can read a lot of books and you can watch videos. 63 00:02:31.640 --> 00:02:34.130 align:middle line:84% When you're actually on the catwalks at a manufacturing 64 00:02:34.130 --> 00:02:35.600 align:middle line:84% facility walking around and having 65 00:02:35.600 --> 00:02:37.640 align:middle line:84% somebody from that facility give you the tour, 66 00:02:37.640 --> 00:02:39.510 align:middle line:84% it just takes it to a whole other level. 67 00:02:39.510 --> 00:02:42.320 align:middle line:84% We were able to see the factory, hear from the CEO, 68 00:02:42.320 --> 00:02:43.470 align:middle line:90% talk to him a little bit. 69 00:02:43.470 --> 00:02:45.900 align:middle line:84% And during that interaction, I sort of said to him, hey, 70 00:02:45.900 --> 00:02:47.990 align:middle line:84% this is really interesting what you guys are doing here. 71 00:02:47.990 --> 00:02:49.470 align:middle line:84% You're really a lean environment. 72 00:02:49.470 --> 00:02:51.303 align:middle line:84% And I can appreciate that because the places 73 00:02:51.303 --> 00:02:53.120 align:middle line:84% I had worked in China, they're just not. 74 00:02:53.120 --> 00:02:55.520 align:middle line:84% And the CEO turned to me and really just said like, hey, 75 00:02:55.520 --> 00:02:56.630 align:middle line:90% can you speak Mandarin? 76 00:02:56.630 --> 00:02:57.693 align:middle line:90% And I said, yes, I can. 77 00:02:57.693 --> 00:02:59.360 align:middle line:84% So then he said, oh, if that's the case, 78 00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:00.710 align:middle line:90% I have a job for you tomorrow. 79 00:03:00.710 --> 00:03:03.380 align:middle line:84% And so it was entirely because of the Academy 80 00:03:03.380 --> 00:03:06.200 align:middle line:84% that I was able to get this amazing internship opportunity. 81 00:03:06.200 --> 00:03:08.210 align:middle line:84% I actually ended up getting an internship early 82 00:03:08.210 --> 00:03:10.168 align:middle line:84% in November because of the Supply Chain Academy 83 00:03:10.168 --> 00:03:12.397 align:middle line:84% because I was able to gather a lot of information 84 00:03:12.397 --> 00:03:12.980 align:middle line:90% and knowledge. 85 00:03:12.980 --> 00:03:16.610 align:middle line:84% And those in combination allowed me to go into my internship 86 00:03:16.610 --> 00:03:19.400 align:middle line:84% with a lot of confidence and ultimately land 87 00:03:19.400 --> 00:03:21.370 align:middle line:90% a full-time position. 88 00:03:21.370 --> 00:03:24.000 align:middle line:90%
