John P. Doan is managing principal of JPD Real Estate Investment Consultants in Rockville, Maryland, a real estate investment consulting firm John began in 2010. Previously, he served for 23 years as the managing director and regional manager of the Washington, D.C. regional office of MassMutual, a Fortune 100 company, and its affiliates Babson Capital Management and Cornerstone Real Estate Advisers. John's office was responsible for more than $3 billion of commercial real estate debt and equity investment on behalf of MassMutual and its clients in hundreds of commercial real estate properties under widely varying market conditions throughout the mid-Atlantic and southeastern United States and Puerto Rico. His office was also responsible for the property management and portfolio management of more than 100 office buildings, shopping centers, apartments, industrial property, and hotels for MassMutual and its clients throughout the region. He served on the company's investment strategy committee where he helped develop commercial mortgage investment and portfolio management strategies, and he served on the advisory board of the Akridge Office Fund, a $100 million private real estate equity fund investing MassMutual and other third party equity in commercial office buildings in greater Washington, D.C.
Before arriving in Washington, D.C., he served for one and a half years as the regional director of MassMutual's Dallas regional office where he was responsible for re-staffing the office and for the company's commercial real estate investment and portfolio management activity throughout the Southwest. He began his MassMutual career in Los Angeles where he served for five years as an assistant then associate regional director responsible for commercial real estate debt and equity investment and portfolio management for the company throughout the West and Rocky Mountain states.
John began his real estate career with The Prudential Insurance Company of America in Columbus and then Cleveland, Ohio, after graduating from Indiana University with an MBA in finance. After Prudential, he worked as an account executive at Merrill Lynch for three and half years in Cleveland and Los Angeles before he began his MassMutual career.
Professional affiliations include the Mortgage Bankers Association of America (MBA), where he was a member and served on various committees, served as a course instructor, and obtained the CMB designation; the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) where he served as vice chair of the National Capital Markets I Forum; and the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, where he was a candidate and completed all required coursework for the MAI professional designation. Currently, John serves as a director on the advisory board of the Center for Real Estate Studies at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, and he serves as the Washington, D.C. area alumni coordinator for the center. Originally from Frankfort, Indiana, he obtained his BA from DePauw University and his MBA in finance from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.
