Derek Bang’s path to leadership

Description of the video:

WEBVTT

00:01.980 --> 00:03.970
- I work for Crowe Horwath.

00:03.970 --> 00:06.040
We are one of the 10 largest accounting,

00:06.040 --> 00:07.980
consulting and technology firms.

00:07.980 --> 00:10.430
I serve as our chief strategy

00:10.430 --> 00:12.590
and innovation officer for the firm.

00:12.590 --> 00:14.450
I manage our innovation process,

00:14.450 --> 00:15.980
and then also business transformation,

00:15.980 --> 00:17.863
so how can we take our
existing businesses,

00:17.863 --> 00:19.970
keep them relevant, transform them

00:19.970 --> 00:22.100
into what they need to be in the future,

00:22.100 --> 00:24.490
just to really give our clients
an exceptional experience.

00:24.490 --> 00:28.470
The Kelly School and the
3/2 Program, in particular,

00:28.470 --> 00:30.900
can be very transformative for someone.

00:30.900 --> 00:32.530
Speaking very personally,

00:32.530 --> 00:35.130
even though many of the
things I learned technically

00:35.130 --> 00:36.780
are no longer even relevant,

00:36.780 --> 00:39.170
what I think that the
program really did for me

00:39.170 --> 00:42.560
was it gave me confidence.

00:42.560 --> 00:44.160
It taught me how to learn.

00:44.160 --> 00:46.630
It taught me to be curious.

00:46.630 --> 00:50.010
It exposed me to the business world,

00:50.010 --> 00:52.790
to other senior executives,

00:52.790 --> 00:55.080
put me in lots of situations that I maybe

00:55.080 --> 00:57.330
would not have been as
comfortable in otherwise,

00:57.330 --> 00:59.080
had I not been through the program.

00:59.080 --> 01:01.920
That allowed me to have
a degree of confidence

01:01.920 --> 01:05.320
going into the earliest part
of my career professionally.

01:05.320 --> 01:08.140
I think if a student is on the
fence about the 3/2 Program,

01:08.140 --> 01:10.690
they need to dig down within themselves

01:10.690 --> 01:14.636
and think about what
they're really looking for

01:14.636 --> 01:16.150
over the long term.

01:16.150 --> 01:18.160
Do they want a job?

01:18.160 --> 01:19.630
Or do they want a career?

01:19.630 --> 01:21.640
And it's not that you can't have a career

01:21.640 --> 01:24.330
going through the undergraduate program,

01:24.330 --> 01:26.440
you have lots of different
opportunities ahead of you,

01:26.440 --> 01:28.560
et cetera, where else can you effectively

01:28.560 --> 01:31.311
get a two-year degree
with one additional year,

01:31.311 --> 01:34.300
at that caliber of a level of education,

01:34.300 --> 01:35.910
and the opportunities that come from that.

01:35.910 --> 01:38.200
I'm just not sure where else
you could possibly get that,

01:38.200 --> 01:39.950
and have that opportunity
right in front of you.

01:39.950 --> 01:43.140
So if you want a whole
additional set of opportunities

01:43.140 --> 01:45.240
that may open up for
you over the long term,

01:45.240 --> 01:47.630
I just can't see how you
would pass up the 3/2.
