Top graduate student IT questions

Kelley’s graduate programs require students to have a laptop computer. While the decision of Mac vs.Windows can be a personal preference, the MSIS program has some strict guidelines. Please review the  MSIS Computer Requirement page for details. For other programs, please see the general-purpose minimum suggested recommendations listed below:

•i5 processor or better
•256 GB or larger local storage
•16GB or more RAM
•Current supported versions of Windows/Mac Operating System

Undergraduate Student Information

While the Kelley School of Business Undergraduate Program does not require undergraduates to have a personal computer, Indiana University Information and Technology Services (UITS) has prepared a set of minimum technology requirements you should keep in mind when considering purchasing a laptop or desktop for school.

Personal machines, however, are not a requirement, and students have access to thousands of public workstations in residence halls and around campus.

MacBooks running an up-to-date OS are certainly welcome at Kelley; however, please note that some applications used during your graduate work may require a Windows environment. In those instances, there are a few options:

    1. Use IUanyWare, which is a client virtualization service available to Indiana University students, faculty, and staff. With IUanyWare, you can use a web browser or mobile app to run certain IU-licensed software applications without having to install them on your computer or mobile device. See About IUanyWare for more information.
    2.  Install a Windows emulation program on your MacBook – here are two popular, though not free, options:
          a. Parallels
          b. VMware Fusion
    3.  For short-term use, check out a Windows loaner laptop. A loaner laptop may be a viable option for week-long reservations, up to three weeks per semester.
    4.  There are multiple computer labs on campus with hundreds of Windows workstations – when not in use for class, labs are generally open to all students.
If you have any questions, please contact ksbit@iu.edu

All Kelley students get affordable and up-to-date access to numerous essential programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe products, anti-virus protection software, and more. Learn how to get the university-licensed software you need by visiting About software at IU.

KSBIT maintains a pool of laptops that may be checked out by Kelley faculty, staff, and graduate students. Grad students loans are available in 1 week increments, with extensions of up to 3 weeks per semester. Check-outs longer than 3 weeks require director approval along with documentation supporting the legitimate need (back-ordered parts or service for a personal machine, etc.).

When borrowing equipment, the student and a KSBIT staff member will jointly inspect the equipment being checked-out and checked-in. Both the student and the KSBIT employee will sign the check-out/check-in form indicating the presence and condition of the items in question. All checked-out items must be present upon check-in, and partial or incomplete returns will not be accepted and will result in late fees until all pieces are returned to KSBIT.

All students borrowing equipment assume financial responsibility for that equipment. Loaned laptops not returned within three business days of its due date will result in a late fee of $25 per day to be charged to the student’s bursar bill. If a loaned laptop is not returned within 30 days of its due date, the student will be charged for the replacement value of all equipment checked out in their name. KSBIT reserves the right to bill a student’s bursar account for any and all damages or loss.

Please note: KSBIT does not offer laptop loans for undergraduate students.

Other helpful information

Academic Use

The Financial Trading Lab (CG1000) is designed for academic use only. Recreational game playing is prohibited. If you are not doing academic work, you may be asked to switch to academic work or give up your workstation to a waiting student. Anyone disturbing the academic environment of the lab may be asked to leave.

Use of Facilities by Persons not Affiliated with the Kelley Graduate School of Business

Access to the Financial Trading Lab technology and resources is a privilege granted to all graduate faculty, staff, and students. Access may also be granted to other individuals for purposes consistent with the mission of KSBIT. Sponsorship by a faculty member or department is required for these accounts and activities.

Quiet Zones

The Financial Trading Lab is designated as a quiet zone when classes are in session. Please respect the rights of others working in the lab by keeping your voice low and using headphones. The instructor workstation and speaker system can only be used during KSBIT approved courses.

No food or drink is allowed

Food and drinks are not allowed in the lab, and you will be asked to remove it immediately. You may store sealed drink containers (a screw cap bottle of soda or water for example, no coffee cups) in the closet immediately inside the door of the lab for later consumption. You are responsible for any drinks you bring in the lab, and you may lose your privileges if you do not clean up after yourself.

Taking a Break

You may leave your workstation for up to fifteen minutes. After that time, the computer will be made available to the next student. If you have locked the workstation and have not returned after fifteen minutes, the computer will be restarted and unsaved data will be lost.

Access to computing facilities

All graduate students will have access to the Financial Trading Lab during open lab sessions at a first come, first served basis. The rooms are available 24 hours a day, and graduate students with scheduling difficulties may be granted card access to the laboratories outside normal hours. Contact Melinda Turpin in room 141 to get an access card. A faculty sponsor is required for card access. Access will be granted within 24 hours of your approval and documentation.

Always swipe your card when accessing the laboratories after hours. This data is used for tracking purposes. Anyone found forging, falsifying, or using another's card or loaning their card to someone else will be disciplined and possibly criminally prosecuted.

You must vacate the lab ten minutes before the start of a scheduled class. The consultant will notify you when there are fifteen minutes to closing or class starting. Do not impede the start of a class with your leaving. If a faculty member allows you to stay during class, this should be clearly defined. If you leave a workstation before the start of a class, your machine will be restarted and your belongings will be confiscated. You may pick your belongings up from the KSBIT main office.

Malicious intent

Anyone found intentionally or maliciously destroying system files on any of the Financial Trading Lab computers will be disciplined, including losing your computing privileges and possible academic or criminal action may be taken.
