I chose +Kelley to expand my career opportunities and supplement my IT experience. While working part-time in IT, I realized I had a strong interest in technology and its application. At that point in time, I decided to get in touch with the program and was excited to hear that they were actively seeking students from nonbusiness/IT backgrounds. In addition, I reached out to +Kelley alumni and heard about how the program prepared them for a very successful career in IT. Choosing +Kelley and joining the MSIS program was ultimately the catalyst which jump-started my career in IT.

I chose +Kelley because you can still pursue what you’re interested in and use the skills in technology and business to get you further in that field. As a journalism undergrad, +Kelley was the great pivot for me that enabled me to join the MSIS program and take all the skills I had gained in journalism and put them forward into a new career path.

I chose +Kelley/MSIS because I wanted the most efficient transition to a career in business that I could get, while capitalizing on the skill set that I gained in my physics and astronomy undergrad. My immersion in IS with my PhD program became possible through the connections I made in MSIS.

I learned about +Kelley during my undergraduate years at IU and I was immediately interested. Upon meeting the staff and learning about the curriculum, I saw the value and success a +Kelley degree would add to my education and my future career. Having an undergraduate degree in economics gave me a strong knowledge base for business concepts, but I knew I needed to specialize to set myself apart. Joining the inaugural MS in Finance (MSF) class was an exciting journey. I challenged myself and gained a deeper understanding of financial functions. The MSF program shaped me into a young professional who is ready to excel in the financial world. From the experienced professors and outstanding career services at the Kelley School of Business, +Kelley surrounded me with successful individuals who strive to make students better.

Throughout my undergraduate experience, I always knew I wanted to work in healthcare and for the most part, I was looking into things like nursing, counseling, psychiatry and so on. However, when I got into different research labs at IU, I realized that when you work directly with people you could only help a limited amount of people. I love the idea that by applying concepts in technology and business you can literally look at millions of people’s data and try to improve policies and trends that have a more widespread impact. +Kelley was a perfect way for me to achieve this goal and only in one year. They have top of the line faculty and initiatives like the summer bootcamp to truly help +Kelley students be on an equal playing field in the fall semester. I will be looking to use my new understanding of information systems and analytics along with my science background at Eli Lilly this summer in their neuroscience department.

After several years studying and participating in research in psychology, I discerned that I ultimately wanted to use my interest in human behavior and social interactions in a career outside of traditional psychological research or therapeutic practice. After taking a few courses at Kelley for my undergraduate minor, I realized I loved working with numbers. For me, finance offered the opportunity to work with numbers that were shifted and moved by the people and social interactions that so interest me. I felt that the motivations of others and the objectives of a business led by people were an integral piece of understanding a firm’s financial information.
As I neared graduation, however, I felt that that I needed more technical skills and classroom instruction before seeking a position in finance. +Kelley offered me the opportunity to gain those skills and to learn more about the field. I enjoyed having the opportunity to learn quickly and to participate in a highly focused program. I believe the strong critical thinking skills and curiosity I developed as an undergraduate student in the arts and sciences helped me to be successful during my time in the MSF program and during my recruitment process.

I was always interested in technology and knew technology was increasing in importance in the business world. Therefore, when I was an exploratory major, I considered informatics before finally choosing economics as my major. Majoring in Informatics would allow me to get into the nitty gritty details of technology, but I wanted to understand technology just enough that I can solve business problems with technology. I was very excited to when I learned about the MS in Information Systems. The program invites all students, even those with no background in technology, and teaches them to become business-minded IT professionals.

The first thing that drew my attention to +Kelley is the fact that there are one-year master’s degree programs, such as MSIS. I saw +Kelley as an opportunity that would not only benefit the start of my career, but also my career progression. I had a lot of soft skills, but I wanted to obtain more hard skills before beginning my career. I knew technology was becoming more important so I took advantage of the offerings +Kelley had by applying for the MSIS program. MSIS does an amazing job of preparing its students for the future. Having Kelley as part of my brand is something I view as invaluable. It is truly an amazing program and I am proud to be part of it.

This program showed that my skills can be an asset in business. This allowed me to expand my career options into areas I did not know existed before, yet it still allowed me to pursue my passion.
I majored in Criminal Justice and minored in Security Informatics/Human Centered Computing. I was able to understand the interaction of technology and crime. MSIS showed me how to understand a business problem and provide a recommended solution. I am currently a consultant to government clients, which brings knowledge from all of my studies.

I learned about +Kelley while participating in the DePauw Management Accelerator Program. I was getting to final rounds of job interviews during my senior year but not landing any offers, so it was clear I needed one more stepping stone between school and career: +Kelley was the right move.
MSIS gave me a solid understanding of information systems from how data is created, collected and stored throughout the business user experience. The program also provided me with tools and skills that I could bring directly into the workplace. During training for my internship with EY, I found that I was more comfortable and proficient at mapping business processes, and thinking through business cases than my peers. After training I was assigned to a project implementing a governance, risk and compliance (GRC) system. My team was impressed to know that MSIS had a module devoted to GRC, and they did not need to teach me the system from scratch. These are only a couple examples.

At the end of my undergraduate career, I was looking to pivot into something related to technology and doing so felt like such a daunting task; I didn’t know where to begin. I ended up attending a +Kelley info session and realized that it was the perfect opportunity to make a smooth transition into another career path, and I’d be able to do so in just one year. Because of the summer boot camp, I was able to catch up on all the program’s prerequisites and feel assured entering MSIS. Throughout my experience, the program has done a great job at welcoming and encouraging students from such a diverse range of backgrounds. It’s incredible how much more confident I feel in my capabilities, and now, I’ve broadened my career opportunities to greater than I had thought possible.
