During the hottest part of the season, we’re celebrating our canine companions who inspired the phrase “dog days.” In ancient times, Greeks and Romans noticed that the Dog Star, Sirius, which was the brightest star in the night sky, started rising with the sun after the summer solstice. They thought this meant we were closer to the “scorching” star, accounting for the high heat in July. It may be hot, but Kelleys know that all “dog days” are good days when we’re with our furry friends. (The "dog days” phrase is also part of a pretty catchy song from Florence + The Machine. You’re welcome for the earworm.)

5 tips for water safety
It’s hot! Sometimes the only way to stay cool outside is in the water. Here are some tips to keep you safe:
- Wear a life jacket. When boating, it’s crucial for less-experienced swimmers to wear a life jacket. Even strong swimmers should wear one or have one nearby. The U.S. Coast Guard reports 83% of boating-related deaths involve people who were not wearing life jackets.
- Teach kids to swim. Drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1-4. Start swimming lessons early and enclose pools to prevent children from getting into the water unsupervised.
- Respect what lies beneath. Natural bodies of water pose a greater risk than pools because of what lies beneath. Currents can pull you away from shore, and there could be hazards under the water you can’t see—never enter open water headfirst.
- Don’t mix alcohol and water. Never enter water or operate watercraft if impaired by alcohol or drugs.
- Use what floats. If someone in the water needs help, throw something that floats for the person to grab on to instead of jumping in yourself as you could become a victim as well. If you do have to enter the water, wear a life jacket.

Super Short Survey: Movement
Interested in getting a little more movement during the work day? We’re looking into scheduling a weekly 40-minute session, 12:10-12:50 p.m., focusing on mobility and light resistance work with an experienced fitness and CrossFit coach, our own Eric Metzler. You would need to bring your own yoga mat. We’d possibly add another day depending on interest. Please fill out this survey to let us know which days of the week would work best for you.
