Whatcha Watchin': Coming-of-age movies

By Hannah Carroll (Office of Marketing and Communications)

My daughter is obsessed with Turning Red. It's been on repeat at my house since we watched it during Spring Break (those 4*Town songs can really get stuck in your head)—and I can see why she likes it.

Like all good coming-of-age films, Turning Red digs into the shared experience of growing up. It's is hard. And awkward. And exciting! All of it makes for entertaining, memorable movies.

Here are a few of my favorites:

My childhood
Now and Then, 1995 (HBO Max)
The Sandlot,
1993 (Disney+, Hulu)

Classics
Almost Famous, 2000 (Amazon Prime)
Lady Bird,
2017 (Netflix)

Comedies
Superbad, 2007 (Hulu)
Easy A,
2010 (Amazon Prime, HBO Max)

Wes Anderson
Rushmore, 1998 (paid, DVD at Monroe County Public Library)
Moonrise Kingdom, 2012 (HBO Max)

How it works: Our staff book club meets the first Wednesday of each month to discuss our current book and choose a book for the following month. If you like to read and wish to explore a variety of texts with colleagues from all over, this is the club for you! If you know anyone interested in joining the staff book club, simply direct them to complete this form.

Current selection: For April, the group will be reading Marie Benedict’s The Only Woman in the Room.

Next meeting:
Wednesday, April 6, from 12:15 to 1 p.m. in HH3026. Please email Sarah Storm for more information.

How it works: We choose a cookbook or website each month to peruse and use, then share a virtual meal together prepared from the cookbook. Participate when you can, prepare some great food, and get to know more of your coworkers!

How it works: If you’re new to hiking and have questions, join the Hiking Club on IU Kelley Hiking Club - Microsoft Teams Site. We have lots of knowledge about trails in and around Bloomington and we’re happy to share!

Our hikes as a group will generally follow these guidelines for our events:

  • Hikes are usually once a month, on Sundays at 10 a.m.
  • We try to select hikes roughly two miles in length with mild/moderate conditions.
  • Locations are usually within 30 minutes of Bloomington so we can experience the amazing areas we have so close to us.
  • Family and pets are encouraged! If a trail has a limited pet policy, we'll do our best to share that with you beforehand.

Safety guidelines:

  • In the past, we had the option to carpool from campus due to the small parking lots of some of the trailheads. Until COVID guidelines are changed, we ask that you stick with what is comfortable for you (if someone is in your "pod," for example).
  • We ask that you wear a mask while on the hike with the group. If you feel the need to remove it for a mask break, please socially distance as you are able.
  • If you feel sick, please stay home and we’ll see you on the next one!

How it works: We meet Thursdays during the lunch hour to work on projects, share tips, and get to know each other better. We are looking to attend some events, such as the yarn crawls and fiber arts festivals. We also plan to do a community project, such as making scarves for the homeless.

LEARNERS WELCOME! We can help you get started!
