Master of Science in Management (MSM) Competencies and Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

1. Principles of Management
Demonstrate a broad understanding of management concepts and tools, and how to apply them to business practice in global settings.

  •  SLO 1.1: Apply core concepts from all areas of management (organizational behavior, human resource management, strategy, international business, and entrepreneurship) to analyze complex business situations.
  • SLO 1.2: Identify issues related to a firm’s current management practices and provide evidence-based recommendations to address them.
  • SLO 1.3: Use critical thinking and decision-making frameworks to provide recommendations to stakeholders on complex business decisions.
  • SLO 1.4: Explain how basic management concepts and skills can be used to affect firm and employee behavior.
  • SLO 1.5: Utilize management frameworks to analyze international business issues, recognizing the benefits and challenges of doing business internationally.

2. Decision-Making Using Quantitative Data
Apply quantitative analysis tools to complex business problems.

  • SLO 2.1: Identify the data needed to solve a given business problem.
  • SLO 2.2: Use quantitative data and appropriate modeling strategies to inform business decisions.
  • SLO 2.3: Apply an understanding of data analytics to managing people.

3. Social and Ethical Responsibility
Demonstrate an awareness of social and ethical issues, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging considerations, in management contexts.

  • SLO 3.1: Identify social and ethical issues associated with managing firms, teams, and individuals.
  • SLO 3.2: Explain how organizations can implement strategies to advance internal and external diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging goals.
  • SLO 3.3: Communicate the trade-offs associated with business decisions from multiple stakeholder perspectives.
  • SLO 3.4: Describe how the firm’s business environment and governance structures impact firm decisions and performance.

4. Communication and Teamwork
Communicate the rationale for business decisions and collaborate with others to implement them.

  • SLO 4.1: Articulate ideas, recommendations, feedback, and other communications clearly, concisely, and persuasively to business audiences using written and verbal mediums.
  • SLO 4.2: Work effectively with others to complete projects or other work.
  • SLO 4.3: Demonstrate leadership skills in team settings, including utilizing appropriate conflict management strategies, team-building techniques, and decision-making frameworks to arrive at collaborative decisions.
