BUS-S355 Topics in Information Systems: Digital Solutions with AI

  • 16 weeks
  • 3 credits
  • Prerequisite(s): Sophomore standing

This course focuses on the development of the prototype of a digital solution for a real business case, using multiple technologies and frameworks. The course starts with coverage of design thinking as an example of approach to design information systems. Following that, the course covers some basic concepts related to Agile development, especially requirements gathering in the form of user stories and the use of sprints. Then, the course discusses the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a variety of business scenarios, and, specifically, in low-code platforms (where applications are developed visually). Finally, the course transitions into live labs in which students work during classes on their low-code applications.

Speaking of low-code, this course uses Mendix, one of the global leaders in low-code platforms. Mendix provides AI-based coding that speeds up the development of new applications. This is a project-based course, where the group will create an application throughout the term. A significant portion of the class time will be dedicated to working on the project, with the instructor coaching students to obtain better results. Outside of class, students will use Mendix Academy “Become a Rapid Developer” to learn the basics about Mendix. Students concluding the course will be ready to take a role in any project involving the development of new information technology solutions. Students concluding the course will also be able to become a certified Mendix Rapid Developer.
