The goal of this course is to provide the context and analytical tools you need to evaluate emerging technologies and develop a technological innovation strategy. The course is designed around three modules – (1) technology innovation strategy and industry dynamics, (2) innovation strategy positions and postures, (3) assessing and recommending technological innovation options.
Organizations must be adaptable, strategically flexible, fast acting, and entrepreneurial if they are to survive in times of increased globalization, product-market disruption, and technological change. The creation and sustenance of organizations with these qualities require that managers – in particular, those managers who lead organizations – become proficient with respect to the strategic management of technology and innovation. Relevant questions are, “What are the pressing technology and innovation management issues facing organizations in the short, mid, and long term?” and “What do executives need to know to effectively address these issues?”
This course provides a forum for the in-depth examination of strategic management topics and analytic frameworks organized around two themes: (1) the interface between technology and strategic management and (2) organizational innovation. We explore this from two perspectives - an internal perspective that focuses on technology management issues, and an external perspective that focuses on the strategic implications of competing in advanced-technology industries. Organizational innovation is explored as a strategic adaptation mechanism that allows firms to effectively respond to the forces of technological change, and possibly to create such change.
Case studies, readings about current emerging technology issues, and intense discussion are used to explore the frameworks and strategic postures that can help a company navigate the inherent uncertainty of technological change.
