BUKD-A 522 Strategic Cost Analysis and Performance Management

This course explores managers’ use of financial (accounting) information to develop, apply, implement, and evaluate a firm’s strategy and enhance its competitive advantage. The course emphasizes how managers critically evaluate and use financial information, along with nonfinancial information, in the strategic decision-making and analysis process. The first module focuses on managers using accounting information to help develop firm strategy and to apply firm strategy in making tactical decisions.

Topics include cost behavior and estimation, the role of various costing approaches to support different strategies, and the assessment of relevant costs for decisions. The second module focuses on managers using accounting systems and tools to control strategy implementation and to evaluate the success of a firm’s strategy. Topics include budgets, strategic profitability analysis, and performance evaluation measures for individual managers and business units.
