The best online MBA experience

Online MBA programs are a popular choice for students who want a world-class education without relocating to another city or sacrificing a full-time job and family obligations. And if we’ve learned anything over the COVID-19 pandemic, it is that we can embrace the online experience and that it can be every bit as beneficial as the in-person experience.

In fact, there are many benefits that come with getting an online MBA that you can’t get with a traditional education. But before we get into that, let’s take a look at the difference between these two methods of education.

The differences between online MBA and in-person MBA

MBA programs online are like those on campus in many ways, yet there are some critical differences between the two options. Online MBA programs are similar to traditional MBA programs in their course content and the ideas and skills they teach. However, with an online program you will watch live webinars or pre-recorded lectures instead of attending in-person lectures or seminar sessions.

There are many types of online classes and how an online MBA class is structured and conducted will vary between business schools and professors. For example, synchronous online MBA courses require students and instructors to be online simultaneously for lectures and discussions, whereas asynchronous online MBA classes allow you to log in and complete your assignments at your convenience and may not provide live interaction with faculty.

When taking an online course, you will use a combination of physical and downloadable or electronic textbooks, PowerPoint presentations, and pre-recorded audio files. However, the very best online MBA experience will provide you with so much more, such as:

  • A full-time, world-class faculty (no adjuncts)
  • Innovative curriculum
  • A program that works directly with businesses and is part of an international network
  • Both synchronous and asynchronous options
  • High production quality for lectures and online programming
  • AACSB international accreditation

In-person experiences should also be a part of the online program. These can include on-campus events and lectures and domestic and global immersion experiences that will help build a sense of belonging and community.

Of course, understanding what to expect is only the beginning. You'll also need to know how to get the most out of your online MBA experience.

Study tips for online MBA students

An online MBA student sitting at a bar-style desk in a cafe, working on a laptop next to a coffee cup. The setting includes lush green plants.

Since you're studying from home or another off-campus location, you need to ensure you have the proper setup. This means having a quiet place without much visual stimulation. It is usually best to find one or two locations and stick to them. This is good for the routine and discipline required for studying.

Speaking of discipline, studying online means setting your study schedule, which can be challenging, especially if you're still working and have a family to consider. As much as possible, set specific study times along with study zones to ensure you stay on track.

Make sure your schedule includes free time and realistic timeframes. Note how long it takes to complete each task, from preparing breakfast to cooking dinner to reading an article. Making a realistic schedule will help you to stay on track. And be sure to take time zones into consideration when working on group projects.

Of course, no matter how well you have prepared, the reality is that sometimes unplanned events pop up and homework assignments take longer than anticipated. Plan your schedule so that you have time to catch up on projects and class work if needed.

Balancing an MBA while working

An MBA, whether online or traditional, is not an easy accomplishment. And when you're going the online route, you have quite a few other things on your plate, too. As such, you need to manage your stress levels to ensure the best chance of success.

Exercise, sleep, and diet are the three best ways to ensure mental clarity and keep stress at bay. Avoid junk food and being over-sedentary during your studies. Instead, get plenty of healthy foods, water, and activity before, during, and after your study periods.

There's so much to be said for staying positive too. An MBA is challenging, so don't beat yourself up too much if you struggle at various points. Instead, get back on track quickly and keep giving it your best.

Online MBA networking

Just because it's an online MBA doesn't mean you're all on your own. Getting in touch with your professors, advisors, and classmates is essential as an online student.

You will feel more connected to others involved in the same program if you speak with them through emails, online chats, or video meetings.

It would be best to network with your professors and fellow students to succeed in your MBA program. Introducing yourself to someone you do not know is an excellent way to network. Look for programs that offer student organizations and networking events for online MBA students.

If you've chosen a top-drawer online MBA provider, you'll also have access to a career coach and counselors who will make this connection an absolute breeze.

For instance, the Kelley School of Business MBA offers the following:

  • Career services that are comprehensive and specialized for graduates during and after their online MBA program period
  • Personalized career counseling and real-world advice from a specialized career coach
  • Student associations and social events for current students and alumni.
  • Integrated online resources to ensure a holistic and balanced MBA experience

Hopefully, you feel more prepared for your online MBA journey. Just remember that the best way to ensure you're getting value for your time and money is to choose a well-respected and AACSB-accredited MBA program such as the Kelley School of Business Online MBA.
