We work to build a culture of caring within the Indiana University and Bloomington communities by fostering connections with local nonprofits. Our goal is to allow business-focused students to translate their skills into the real world to create real change.

Through planning, leading, and volunteering at events, you can build your leadership skills beyond the classroom and take them with you into your future.

Community partners

Our nonprofit partners in the Bloomington area offer students countless opportunities to engage in volunteer service projects, group volunteering activities, and highly-selective nonprofit internships. CLD members collaborate with these community organizations to address a range of social issues including hunger, youth services, animal welfare, environmental issues, and human rights, among many others.

Promoting education is central to CLD’s volunteer efforts.  CLD members have partnered with Junior Achievement, WonderLab, United Way, and other organizations to support and teach community members how to succeed in the workplace, achieve financial independence and stability, and to reach their full potential.

If you are a local nonprofit organization interested in partnering with Civic Leadership Development, contact kisi@iu.edu.

The Jeffrey Maiatico Volunteer Award (also known as Volunteer of the Month) honors Kelley students who have demonstrated outstanding engagement in volunteerism through Civic Leadership Development. Award recipients are announced in October, November, December, February, and March of each academic year. In addition, one Volunteer of the Year is selected from those CLD members named as Volunteer of the Month (named for Dr. John H. Porter). John Porter was a Kelley faculty member, longtime chair of its Undergraduate Program and Associate Dean of Students at IU.

Jeffrey Maiatico

The Volunteer of the Month award is named in memory of Jeffrey Maiatico of Haddonfield, N.J., who was a junior at the Kelley School of Business when he passed away on Oct. 31, 2003. In addition to his studies, Maiatico mentored children through Big Brothers/Big Sisters and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
