Step 1. Secure an unpaid or underpaid internship with a public, private, or nonprofit organization with a social impact focus.

Step 2. Complete the scholarship application by the deadline. The following will be required:

• Application form with responses to the following short-answer questions (200 words or less):
  • Why are you applying for the Changemaker scholarship?
  • How will this internship make a positive social impact?
  • How is this internship going to expand your business education?
• Internship job description from the employer
• Internship offer letter from the employer
• Budget information including anticipated expenses and income

March 1 to April 13: Applications open

• Attend a meeting with all scholarship recipients before summer begins (likely during final exam week) to discuss the scholarship and take a group photo.
• Complete the photo, video, and audio consent and release form through IU to give permission for group and individual photos related to the Changemaker scholarship to be utilized for marketing purposes.
• Complete the Changemaker Internship Scholarship Final Checklist by the given deadline (end of summer; specific date will be shared during the group meeting). This includes answering short answer questions about the summer internship experience, uploading a resume with the summer internship and scholarship listed, providing the requested photos, and expressing thanks to the donor (details to be shared at a later date).

An internship is considered "underpaid" if the hourly wage is below the average hourly wage reported for internships on the Kelley Undergraduate Career Services salary statistics webpage.

KISI aligns with the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and NACE stated the definition of an internship is "a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional workplace setting".

• Does the organization aim to address social, environmental, or community issues?
• Is your role contributing to positive change or addressing a specific social need?
• If you still have doubts, you can describe your internship in your application, highlighting how it aligns with the scholarship's focus on business and social impact. The selection committee will review your description and determine eligibility based on the provided information.

All application materials should be thorough and complete. A competitive application should successfully demonstrate a clear relationship between a student's business and social impact internship with future career goals. It should also clearly articulate all expected expenses and income during the summer internship. The committee of Kelley staff will review and evaluate applications immediately following the deadline and notify applicants via email.

Per University policy, these funds must be paid through the IU Bursar’s system. If you are receiving any financial support through Indiana University (e.g., grants, scholarships, loans, etc.), then receipt of the Changemaker Scholarship award may negatively impact your current awards. Unfortunately, Kelley School staff are unable to determine this for you. We are also unable to resolve any resulting financial aid conflicts.

Action Item: To save yourself time and potential conflict, it is very important that you understand your financial circumstances. Contact financial aid staff in the Student Central on Union office as soon as possible. Explain that you are considering applying for a summer scholarship and ask what impact, if any, receipt of the specific amount in additional funding in the summer term could have on your current awards. Scholarships should appear in the students bursar account within the first couple weeks of the summer semester starting. KISI Staff are not notified when awards are disbursed so students must continue to check their bursar account and should reach out with any questions or concerns once the summer semester has begun.
