The Investment Management Workshop, directed by Eric Crigler, CFA, is a highly selective, intensive program that prepares motivated students for a career in Research, Sales & Trading, Private Wealth Management, and Asset Management. It develops students academically, professionally, and technically for internship and full-time opportunities on Wall Street.

Admitted workshop members will take 2 classes (BUS-F312 and BUS-F412), totaling 3 credit hours. Additional professional development opportunities include:

  • An alumni Superday
  • Weekly alumni speakers,
  • Networking trips to New York City and Chicago
  • Specialized instruction with Training the Street
  • Junior and senior mentors
  • Supplemental leadership team lectures covering a myriad of technical modules.

Many successful applicants to the IMW are members of the Knall Cohen Investment Fund (KCF). Applications to the KCF are open in Spring of a student’s first year. The KCF course teaches students fundamental equity analysis with a goal of replicating the role of a sell-side equity analyst. Additionally, qualifying IMW students may also be eligible for the Finkelstein Family Investment Management Workshop Scholarship. This may be awarded to IMW members in the spring semester in the first year of the workshop.

The Investment Management Workshop engages with many firms in the industry, including:

  • Bank of America
  • Barclays
  • Bernstein
  • Baird
  • BlackRock
  • Blackstone
  • BNY Mellon
  • Citibank
  • Deutsche Bank
  • Evercore ISI
  • Goldman Sachs
  • HSBC
  • Jefferies
  • J.P. Morgan
  • KeyBanc
  • Mesirow
  • Morgan Stanley
  • Neuberger Berman
  • Piper Sandler
  • PNC
  • PGIM
  • RBC
  • Trillium
  • UBS
  • Wells Fargo
  • William Blair
  • Wolfe Research

Workshop Application and Admission

To be considered for the IMW, students must:

  • Be admitted to the Kelley School of Business
  • Be an undergraduate member of the class of December 2027 or May 2028

While not mandatory, prior to their sophomore year, students are encouraged to complete the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam (contact Dan Aron at danaron@iu.edu for suggested study materials). In addition, participation in courses such as BUS-F100 and programs like the Knall-Cohen Investment Fund can provide valuable skills and experience that strengthen a prospective applicant’s candidacy for the IMW (learn more about the Knall-Cohen Fund here).

Students are encouraged to utilize online resources to prepare for the technical components of interviews. There are many free and paid resources that can be valuable. Please note that applicants will be evaluated holistically, with consideration given not only to technical proficiency, but also to behavioral and communication skills, professionalism, networking ability, and other relevant qualities.

Strong applicants will demonstrate:

  • Strong first-year academic performance, particularly in quantitative and business-related coursework
  • Completion of the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam*
  • High attention to detail and demonstrated intellectual curiosity over time relating to macroeconomic events, security analysis, industry-level trends, global financial news, and various asset classes (e.g. equities, fixed income, currency, commodities)
  • Active participation in extracurricular activities, especially those related to markets and investments. Pursuing leadership roles that show initiative and impact is encouraged
  • Curiosity to explore the Workshop’s tracks, whether through professional networking or engagement with IMW upperclassmen, to gain deeper insight into each track
  • Well-crafted application and strong performance on the behavioral, technical, and markets-based admittance interviews
  • A desire to work in a collaborative, professional, and safe environment where the IMW is a priority. High standards of care regarding integrity and personal conduct are expected

*Admitted members of the Investment Management Workshop may be eligible for reimbursement of SIE exam fees and approved study material expenses based on passage of the exam. This is subject to change and may not apply to all students due to scholarship restrictions. Certain restrictions apply.
.

All applicants to the Investment Management Workshop (IMW) will participate in a standardized application process. Apply here, after the September 15th opening date. Additionally, the application will be widely disbursed via our email distribution list.

Applicants will be assessed through a holistic review process that considers academic performance, demonstrated interest in investment management, interview performance, and all other application materials. All stages of the application process, including the final admission decision, will be led by Professor Eric Crigler and Dan Aron working with the IMW leadership team.

To apply to the IMW, students will be required to submit a formal application. The application opens on September 15th at 7pm EST and closes on September 26th at 11:59 PM EST*. Following the application deadline, you will receive information regarding next steps, which may include up to three additional interviews conducted 10/3 through 10/31. Final decisions will be released no later than 11/2.

Each track also requires a unique deliverable that is supplementary to the baseline application materials. This is due only at the time of a potential first-round interview; however, we encourage you to start early:

  • Research - Stock/Credit Pitch: Submit a two-page written pitch (one-page front and back) including a company overview, investment catalysts, risks, and valuation supported by charts/graphs, plus a separate page with a comparable company analysis table.
  • Sales & Trading – Macro Narrative & Asset Class: Create a macro narrative (1st of 2 pages) and as a portfolio manager at a macro long-short fund, pitch which of the following asset classes you would be over or underweight (2nd of 2 pages): domestic large cap equities; US investment grade credit (10-year duration); dollar vs euro; gold; or oil.
  • Private Wealth Management - Asset Allocation Pitch: Based on our given scenario (to be provided to PWM applicants), submit a professional one-page pitch that includes a holdings summary table with individual product listings, a portfolio pie chart, and a clear explanation of why your investment decisions are suitable for a mock client. In addition, provide 5-10 thoughtful questions you would ask the client during a meeting.

*You will receive a confirmation that your application has been received. If you do not, please reach out to imw@iu.edu or IMW advisor Dan Aron at danaron@iu.edu. No late submissions will be accepted. Only applications submitted during the application window will be reviewed. We strongly encourage early submission of your application rather than waiting until the final deadline.

  • September 15th @ 7 PM EST – Applications Open
  • September 15th @ 7 PM & 8:30 PM EST – Fall Callout Meetings
  • September 24th – 25th @ 7 PM EST – Meet the Members
  • September 26th @ 11:59 PM EST – Applications Due*
  • October 3rd – 31st – In-Person Interviews Conducted
    • First Round: October 3rd and October 4th

Workshop Time Commitment

Upon admittance to the IMW, students are expected to prioritize all workshop activities during their sophomore year and actively contribute to supporting their peers. This is imperative as we work together to prepare you for the rigors of the internship recruitment process, which will take place in the second semester of your sophomore year.

Participation is required for the Upperclassman Superday (November 16th) and Alumni Superday (December 6th). You are strongly encouraged to attend the New York Trip* (January 7th–9th), which includes visits to leading Wall Street firms along with evening networking events.

After admission to the workshop, the IMW Leadership Team will conduct mandatory Monday and Wednesday evening sessions focused on recruiting fundamentals during the first semester of your sophomore year. In addition, students must complete two required 8-week, 1.5-credit courses taught by Professor Eric Crigler: BUS-F312 (taken in the second semester of sophomore year); and BUS-F412 (taken in the first semester of your junior or senior year). Along with the time commitment, members of the IMW are expected to conduct themselves professionally and treat all members with respect.

To remain in good standing, members must commit to attending all required classes, company presentations, and networking events with alumni and industry professionals. The Investment Management Workshop has made community service a priority and it is expected that all members will participate in one or more service events. As upperclassmen, IMW members are expected to serve as mentors to underclassmen and as ambassadors to the firms where they may intern or be employed.

*The cost of the trip is the responsibility of the student. The Finkelstein Family Scholarship is available to all IMW applicants; however, only admitted members are eligible to receive it.
