The Investment Banking Workshop (IBW), directed by David Haeberle and Steve Sibley, seeks to immerse Kelley’s highest-performing finance and accounting students in the financial services industry.
Admitted workshop members will complete 7.5 credit hours of coursework over their second, third, and fourth years. Additional professional development opportunities include annual alumni networking events, a pitch competition, and second-year trips to New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco.
Workshop Application and Admission
To be considered for the IBW, students must meet ALL of the following requirements:
- Be admitted to the Kelley School of Business
- Have completed at least 24 credit hours
- Hold a minimum 3.75 cumulative GPA at the start of the Fall 2026 semester
- Have completed BUS-A 100
- BUS-F 100 is highly recommended but not required
- Enroll in BUS-F 210 in the Fall semester of second year
The curriculum begins within various finance clubs during the first year, where students are introduced to foundational industry knowledge. Students can prepare for the IBW application process by completing BUS-A 100 during their first year then enrolling in BUS-F 210 in their second year. BUS -F 210 is offered in the first 8 weeks of the Fall semester and is designed to help students understand the foundational skills and practices necessary to network and recruit with financial services firms. Please note, students will be considered on a holistic basis, meaning a student will be evaluated on all fronts including technical ability, behavioral skills, communication skills, professionalism, networking ability, and more.
A well-rounded applicant will have:
- Strong first-year grades, especially in relevant subjects such as accounting, math, and other business-related courses. Proficiency in accounting is imperative
- Finance & accounting double majors are preferred candidates. Single majors in accounting are preferred over finance for both admittance to the IBW and for obtaining employment in the financial services industry
- Active participation in extracurricular activities, especially those related to
business or leadership roles - A well-crafted application essay that demonstrates the applicant’s passion
for finance, accounting, and their fit for the IBW program - Relevant work experience or internships
- Demonstrated interest in the financial markets as a perpetual learner with accelerated career goals
- Strong performance on the behavioral, technical, and markets-based admittance interviews
All students interested in applying to the IBW must meet all requirements listed above and complete the application process while enrolled in BUS-F 210 in the Fall semester of their second year. The application process includes a formal written application and a series of interviews.
Workshop Time Commitment
While students are not expected to have any experience in the financial services industry, they should demonstrate a passion for finance, accounting, investing, and the financial markets. The IBW historically has placed students into traditional investment banking positions in mergers and acquisitions, restructuring, and other financial advisory industry or coverage groups. The IBW also places students in principal investment roles including private equity and private credit, and this trend is expected to increase.
Once admitted to the IBW, students should prioritize IBW activities, including helping their peers. While we expect students to apply to multiple Kelley workshops, as workshop participation is important to the development of students’ education, students should expect that they can only be a part of the IBW if they are not members of other Kelley workshops. To be in good standing, a member must commit to attending any required meetings and networking sessions with alumni and employers within the field and attend required classes their second, third, and fourth year prior to graduation.
