This program will not be offered in Spring 2021.
Are you ready for an intensive cultural immersion?
The Course (Spring 2021—Second 8 Weeks)
Our 3 credit hour course, Business in a Flat World (BUS-P 256), is taught in the second eight weeks of the spring semester and tuition for this course is included in the spring semester tuition. The course covers globalization and emerging economies in general and the economy and businesses of India in particular. The course also introduces you to India's history and culture.
In BUS-P 256, students gain from their academic and experiential learning a new perspective on the social/political/cultural background of India, the institutional context of business in India, and an introduction to conducting business in India, including a look at how supply chain, marketing, and information management is achieved in this every growing emerging market.
BUS-P 256 can be used as an elective toward the International Business co-major. The course does not apply to the World Language and Cultures requirement or the sophomore Global Foundation Core. Final course grades will be withheld until the completion of the required study tour to India.
Please be aware that this is an academic study tour. You will be expected to behave and dress in a professional manner. Participation and conduct will be part of the course grade. The travel component of the study tour can be physically intense and students should be prepared for long days in a hot climate.
The Study Tour
The study tour will take place in late July/early August. There will be a mandatory pre-travel orientation course on the day of departure. While in India, three days will be spent visiting Delhi and Agra, home of the Taj Mahal, and the remaining days will be spent in Pune and Mumbai. In Delhi, Pune, and Mumbai, you will visit local businesses, academic and government institutions, and NGOs. There will be a mandatory pre-travel orientation course on the day of departure.
The $3,500 cost of the program includes travel to the airport, roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations, daily breakfast, entrance fees, visa, and international health insurance. You are advised to budget $40 per day to cover some meals which are not provided.
Beyond these costs, you will be responsible to pay for any immunizations or medications you choose to receive. None are required, but many are suggested. You will have the chance to meet with a travel clinic nurse from IU, or you may opt to see your family physician.
The online application will be open November 2 and close at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, December 16.
BUS-P 256 is open to IU Bloomington Kelley Direct Admit Freshmen only, and space is limited to a maximum of 28 participants.
Decisions will be made by Thursday, January 14, 2021. You will have until Thursday, January 21, 2021 to accept or decline an offer of acceptance. If you accept the offer, the program balance of $3,500 will be charged to your IU Bursar account. $500 of the fee is non-refundable. Please be aware that this is a selective program. While there is no GPA requirement, past participants have had an average GPA of 3.6.
Since you must register for spring courses before admission decisions are made, you are advised to register for a full semester load (12–18 credits). Please leave Thursday evening from 4–6:30 p.m. free during the second 8 weeks of Spring 2021. Accepted students will be administratively enrolled into BUS-P 256 (2nd 8 weeks, 4–6:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings in Hodge Hall). If you are accepted into the program, the three credits may put you over the 40 credit hour limit permitted to students across fall, spring, and our August and winter intersessions. If you exceed the 40-credit limit, additional tuition fees are assessed; if this is the case, you should be prepared to drop one of your other courses.
There is currently one scholarship opportunities for students interested in the Business in the Flat World program:
- The Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) is offering scholarships. Students who are U.S. citizens and have completed the FAFSA are eligible. Applications will be accepted through December 16.
