This course serves as an introduction to professional development and career management while also acting as deeper follow up to the GCS workshops presented during a student’s first Kelley Connect Week. The course is also a precursor to the more extensive career management course, X574. Members of the Kelley School’s Graduate Career Services coaching team dedicated to Kelley Direct students lead this course. The value of graduate management education is measured by both acquisition of knowledge and development of skills. Income and advancement potential enabled by the Kelley graduate degree depends upon an ability to sell the value of it, and the student who achieves it, to existing and potential employers. In a manner customized for working professionals in an online program, X503 level sets all first year Kelley Direct students so that the Graduate Career Services team serves them effectively throughout their program and provides students with the basic tools for effective career management.
Specific objectives of this course include:
Students will work on a live real-life case that requires development of an integrated business recommendation. This authentic case permits students to apply the fundamentals they have studied during their first year in Kelley Direct in a capstone experience. As such students will be required to analyze and solve a highly complex, multi-faceted business problem. Throughout the week, instructors will cover a variety of topics relevant to the “live” case. These sessions are designed to both review key concepts introduced during the first year of the KD program and introduce new concepts that extend students’ understanding of strategic analysis in a global environment. Sessions topics include: strategic analysis with special emphasis on country analysis and market entry strategies, financial analysis, risk analysis and risk mitigation, business ethics, and critical thinking. In addition, instructors will also review where and how to gather data needed to conduct complex strategic analyses, how to make effective presentations, and how to create a effective slide deck using storyboarding. *This course is the new course for the Kelley Connect Week (formally called in-residence)
The "Washington Campus Program" offers an intensive one-week course targeted at MBA students, which provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of how regulatory, economic, tax, and trade policies are created. Subjects include policy development in the executive branch, government regulation, lobbying activities, and domestic and international economic policy issues. This interactive learning experience includes classroom discussion and on-site visits to Capitol Hill and government departments and agencies. Guest lecturers are drawn from the ranks of current and former senior government officials, including members of Congress and their staff, former members of the President's cabinet and staff, representatives of major economic institutions, individuals working inside and outside of regulatory agencies, and members of the national press.

The foundation for career management is built on knowing and leveraging your skills, values, personality, interests, and potential. How you choose to bring those to life as you manage your career will differ when you are moving up the ladder than when you are seeking roles outside of your firm. During this course, we will help you understand who you are as an employee and what makes you stand out. We will take a look at how your company views you from a talent management and succession planning standpoint and what impact that has on your career trajectory. You will do a series of assessments and ask for feedback on your performance and potential. Additionally, and most importantly, you will work on a developmental action plan to guide your career forward.
This course will teach you how to plan for and execute an effective job search using actionable weekly assignments to bring you closer to your next position. During the 6 week sessions, we will help you develop your unique brand in the professional marketplace through targeted networking and company research. We will also go over behavioral based interviewing and the C-A-R format for responding to the most commonly asked interview questions. By the end of this course, you will be able to complete an efficient job search to transition to a new company, industry, or geographic location. It is recommended that you take this course in your second or third term in the KD program to make the most out of the strategies taught so you can implement them during the remainder of your time at Kelley.
