Sponsor a Capstone Project to access business solutions

Partner with talented business technologists from the top-ranked Kelley School of Business

Need fresh eyes for a complex business technology problem at your organization? Each semester the Kelley School’s Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) program connects teams of graduate students with businesses and not-for-profit organizations to solve your business tech problems. As a project sponsor, you define a meaningful IT-related challenge or initiative and a team of three to five highly qualified MSIS students, supported by Kelley faculty, spend the whole semester researching, analyzing, and developing solutions and recommendations for you.

Results for your organization

Many clients return year after year, providing an experiential learning opportunity for students that benefits clients’ businesses and makes our MSIS program one of the best in the country.

Frequently asked questions

Projects should focus on the management of information systems or IT strategy. Examples include system evaluations, process improvements, or data governance. Projects should limit development work to 20% or less of total effort.

Students complete their Capstone Project during the spring or fall semester, with the project lasting approximately 13 to 14 weeks. Teams kick off their projects during the first week of the semester and deliver a final presentation and whitepaper by the end of the term.

Clients typically assign a project manager who can commit around two hours per week to meet with the student team, provide guidance, and help facilitate internal access to data and stakeholders as needed. Students are supported by Kelley faculty and operate as professional teams—managing expectations, providing regular updates to you, and delivering a final presentation and whitepaper.

MSIS students come from diverse academic and international backgrounds, primarily with bachelor’s degrees in business or informatics. Some have had internships or other professional experiences. All of the students have been selected through a competitive admissions process.

While small-scale prototyping such as mock-ups, Excel tools, and wireframes may be part of the deliverables, you should not scope projects as software development engagements.

Most client interaction is conducted remotely. Clients are welcome and encouraged to visit Bloomington for in-person meetings, especially for project kickoff and final presentations. Students are also welcome to accept invitations to travel to meet clients, but in such cases we do ask that students be reimbursed for their expenses.

All deliverables and artifacts produced by the team belong to the client and can be used internally as appropriate.

You will receive a final presentation, a whitepaper specific to your needs, and any other relevant project artifacts. You'll also be invited to a presentation event summarizing client-approved highlights across all capstone teams.
