Why is experiential learning important in finance?

As you apply what you’re learning in the classroom to real-world business scenarios, you’ll sharpen your finance skills while gaining exposure to challenges you’ll face on the job. A critical component of the MSF curriculum, experiential learning is a path for you to grow your capacity for financial leadership, communication, and decision-making—integrating theory and practice.

Scott Smart profile

“Practicums and experiential learning opportunities with the MS in Finance program allow students to apply their finance skills and build a portfolio of practical work that bolsters their appeal to potential recruiters.”

Scott SmartChair of Finance Graduate Programs, Clinical Professor of Finance, E-II Faculty Fellow

Explore how to get experience in finance as a master’s student

Work with an outside entity on solving actual financial issues through discussion and analysis of real-world financial transactions. Connect with industry professionals to gain an insider’s understanding of the financial landscape.

Gain finance work experience with a client ranging from a not-for-profit or private company to a Fortune 500 company. Assist your client in problem-solving around process improvement, evaluation, benchmarking, valuation, and more. Past projects included the development of a business plan and financial forecast for an entrepreneur opening a gym; an investment viability analysis of a solar power project from the perspective of the equity investor and bond investor; strategic planning and valuation for an independently owned pharmacy; and the economic analysis and financial projection for the satellite internet market.

Learn how to pitch a stock—then take your pitch to the Reese Fund Board of Advisors, a panel of Kelley alumni investment professionals. The fund, adjusted each year based on recommendations by Kelley MSF students, is an actual portfolio, offering MSF students valuable applied experience in financial management, financial statement analysis, common stock valuation, and portfolio construction.

Gain experience in financial management and value investing with a portfolio currently in trust with Merrill Lynch of Miami, valued at $100k. Identify, analyze, and pitch recommendations to the Value Fund Investment Committee for use in discretionary direction of the funds’ assets.

Develop your ability to perform under pressure, polish your presentation skills, and practice problem-solving through a variety of case competitions. You’ll work with faculty to prepare your case and apply finance expertise to a practical business dilemma. Engage with highly talented business students from across the US, stand out to distinguished industry professionals, and test your skills in a secure setting.

“In our classes, we take a practical approach to how financial concepts are dealt with in real life through a variety of case studies and projects. We’re not limited to the theoretical components of finance—we learn how to effectively apply them in practical situations.”

Rodrigo Cyrillo Villa, MSF’25Associate, EY-Parthenon

What does a job in finance look like abroad?
