How to apply

All application instructions are included with the online application form. You must apply online, however, there are still supporting documents that need to be mailed in order for your application to be complete. Only complete applications will be considered for admission.

We will begin accepting applications for the fall semester beginning October 1 of the preceding year. The priority deadline for fall admission, with the submission of a completed application, will be December 15.

Note: Search for “Kelley Business PhD” when applying.

Application instructions

In addition to the fully completed online application form the following items are needed for applicants:

The fee is paid when submitting the online application. This can be paid online via a credit card.

At least three recommendations are to be submitted through the online application system before the application deadline. Letters of reference with each application are to be submitted for both US and international students.

Arrange to take either the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the general test portion of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE). These tests are administered at numerous locations throughout the United States and in many other countries. Official GMAT or GRE test results must be no older than five years from the date of application, and submitted directly from the GMAT or GRE educational testing services. Only official GMAT or GRE scores reported directly to Indiana University will be considered for application. We do not accept self-reported GMAT or GRE scores. This is a requirement of application and no exceptions will be made. Without an official GMAT or GRE score reported by ETS to Indiana University your application will not be considered for admission.

At the time of application, we require a scanned copy of the official transcripts from each postsecondary school you have attended, regardless of whether you obtained a degree. The scanned documents must be clearly legible and sized to print on standard 8½-by-11-inch paper. Transcripts for study abroad programs or transfer credits are not required if the course titles, grades and credit hours are included on the transcript of the degree-granting institution. If your transcripts are in languages other than English, also submit translated versions. Receipt of official transcripts at the time of application is strongly preferred. If you are offered admission, you will be required to submit official, original transcripts before you can accept your offer.

If you chose to submit official transcripts via electronic eScript or other service submission, when you select Indiana University as the transmission location, instead of selecting the recipient as “Admissions” use the drop-down selection to input the following email address as the specific submit to email location ksbdoc@iu.edu.

All international students must submit one of the following tests. (Minimum score requirements are in parentheses.)

  • TOEFL (100)
  • IELTS (Band 7.5)
  • Duolingo English Test (130)

Please note that we will not review applications from applicants with scores below these minimum scores. Applicants who have previously earned a four-year degree in a country where the primary spoken language is English may request a waiver.

Your current resume should be submitted as an attachment through the online application process under the resume section of the eApp.

You must submit a personal statement detailing academic, career, and personal objectives, which will be read by professors in the appropriate field. The personal statement should explain why you wish to enroll at the Kelley School of Business, describe your qualifications, and identify special interest areas of study. The personal statement should be submitted through the online application. The personal statement is an opportunity for you to tell us about your academic and career direction and goals. Some major areas ask specific questions in the online application; be sure that you answer the questions that are asked on the application. Make a case for why you will fit into a particular program and what you will be able to contribute, rather than just what you hope to receive.

Note: There is no word limit on your personal statement document, regardless of any notation on the IU University Graduate School application instructions.

Submit your complete application by the priority application deadline. Early application is encouraged. To be considered on time, your online application must be submitted along with all supporting materials received by the priority deadline. Delaying your application or the submission of required application materials may put you at a disadvantage for admission consideration. Some departments begin their application review processes earlier than others. Only complete applications will be considered for admission.
