  • 12 weeks
  • 3.00 credits
  • Prerequisite(s): Kelley Direct Online Executive Doctor of Business Administration (EDBA) students only

This course provides an in-depth exploration of the strategic, theoretical, and practical dimensions of business model innovation, focusing on how firms create, capture, and sustain value in a rapidly changing world. The course will explore how traditional business elements are transformed by forces such as digital transformation, sustainability, and socio-economic shifts.

Students will critically engage with both established and emerging theories of business model innovation, exploring its role in fostering competitive advantage and organizational resilience and adaptability. The course will cover a range of industries and organizational sizes, examining how business models can evolve to meet the demands of digitalization and artificial intelligence, sustainability imperatives, shifts in global value chains and value propositions.

Through in-depth analysis of start-ups, small enterprises, and established firms, the course emphasizes the importance of adapting and creating business models in response to both external pressures and internal organizational innovation. The course will examine the key Drivers of Business Model Innovation, such as Technological Advancements and Market Dynamics. Students will engage with hands-on topics like Business Model Design, Prototyping, and Testing, focusing on practical approaches to innovation. The integration of Value Propositions will be central to understanding how firms align their offerings with customer needs. Digital Transformation is a significant theme, where students explore the implications of e-commerce and platform business models on innovation. The role of Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility in business model design is also emphasized, reflecting growing demands for social and environmental consciousness in strategic planning.

The course culminates in topics on Strategic Implementation, emphasizing alignment, change management, and the challenges faced by established firms. The final modules focus on Measuring and Evaluating Business Model Innovation, using KPIs, metrics, and evaluation techniques to assess success. Future Trends will encourage students to anticipate emerging disruptions and explore new directions in business model innovation, preparing them to lead transformative change in their organizations or research.

Throughout the course, we will engage in applied, case-based and experiential learning with additional videos and materials to foster meaningful discussions during live sessions. By the end of this course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of how to apply the questions of "how," "what," "who," and "why" to business models, enabling them to develop de novo and critically appraise existing models.
