BUKD-C524 Strategic Entrepreneurship

This classexplores strategic decision making and action under conditions of extremeuncertainty. To do this, we examine issues and opportunities confrontingentrepreneurs as they create and build anew business, rapidly scale an existing product or service, or acquire,develop, and grow an existing business. In the first part of the class, weunpack twelve principles of entrepreneurial process (first 4 weeks). Then inthe second part of the class we apply those principles to case studies ofbusiness ventures confronting six different strategic challenges (6weeks). The case studies focus on strategic challenges related to (1) ideatingand launching a new concept, (2) searching for and buying a business, (3)financing and growing a business, (4) pivot and adapting a product or service,(5) diversifying and/or globalizing an offering, and (6) exiting abusiness. At the end of this class students should be able to (a) identifyand describe key strategic junctures for high-potential ventures and rapidlygrowing firms or business unit, (b) diagnose and evaluate the opportunities andchallenges at each key strategic juncture, (c) discover and develop viablesolutions to address the opportunities and challenges for high potentialventures and rapidly growing firms or business units, and (d) deliver solutionsto address the opportunities and challenges to make a high potential venture, rapidlygrowing firm, or business unit viable and sustainable. The class grade is madeup of three components: (1) case study preparation questions, (2) a strategicentrepreneurship principles podcast assignment, and (3) a venture strategydevelopment assignment.
