[music] [Narrator] In our last video, we told you how supply chain management is made up of four different components: plan, source, make, and deliver. In this video, we’ll be talking specifically about planning. [Jeanette Cade] My name is Jeanette Cade, and I’m a planner with Boston Scientific in Spencer, Indiana. Boston Scientific is a worldwide, innovative medical device manufacturer. So devices manufactured here at the Spencer site help patients that have been diagnosed with gastrointestinal or pulmonary or urological disorders. Planning is important because we’re the drivers of information from the beginning of the supply chain process, and it flows throughout the entire process. [music] [Jeanette Cade] As a planner, I work with purchasing to procure material needed for production plans that I maintain. We have over 100 different production lines. Within those production lines, there are 800 variations, and I oversee 15 of those production lines and about 140 of those variations. So I think the students should really consider being a supply chain management major because they can go into almost any industry and any job role. [Adam Keyler] My name is Adam Keyler. I’m a commodity specialist for electronics at Allegiant. Allegiant makes lots. We manufacture door closers. We manufacturer exit devices. We manufacture bike locks. We manufacture pad locks. [music] [Adam Keyler] Sourcing is constantly balancing the cost quality customer requirements. It’s making sure that you create partnerships with suppliers who are going to put you at an advantage. To make sure that you’re becoming more innovative and that they’re delivering when they say they are and what they say they are. And it’s the best quality. [music] [Adam Keyler] So one day, I could be visiting a supplier or at one of our manufacturing facilities. Another day, I could be resolving a supplier issue that has occurred and need to take care of. Ultimately, Allegiant needs to deliver safe and reliable products, and that’s why sourcing is really important for us. [Lisa Engel] My name is Lisa Engel, and I am a defense supply chain designer for Rolls Royce. In our civil aerospace market, every 2.5 seconds, a Rolls Royce-powered aircraft lands or takes off somewhere in the world, and my role within the company is to ensure that we’re keeping our cost and inventory down while improving the delivery of our engines to our customers. [music] [Lisa Engel] Supply chain make is the manufacturing of the components that are going to be assembled onto engines, which we deliver to our customers. So with the supply chain, you’re interacting with so many different areas, including all of those people that are part of those processes of building those components. You also have to manage the scheduling of those parts because we have parts that may take over a year. They may only take six weeks. [music] [Lisa Engel] You have to look at the finished good that we have, and that is an engine. And those engines are then sent off to be put on airplanes, which then move people and product all over the world. [Andrew Welling] My name is Andrew Welling, and I’m the transportation manager for Knopf Insulation North America. Knopf Insulation North America is one of the large insulation providers in North America. My role as the transportation manager is to oversee a team of transportation specialists. We’re responsible for everything to do with the shipment—from the start of the time of order to the shipment completion time. [music] [Andrew Welling] I oversee all of the shipments, so I will run daily reports to make sure that all of our shipments have been picked up on time. I monitor my team’s overall performance to make sure that they’re tendering out up to seven days out to ensure that we have capacity for our shipments. You still get the analytics. There’s still a lot of details from that standpoint. Indianapolis is located within 12 hours of half of the population of the U.S., so there are several opportunities right outside your back yard.
