Accounting Explore-Versity Recruits Diverse Talent - 10/16/2013
Diversifying our student population is a key priority of Dean Idie Kesner, and Kelley continues to execute a number of targeted recruitment events as a result. This recruiting strategy is paying off – Kelley has doubled the percentage of underrepresented minority students on campus in the last five years. Along with Junior Executive Institute and Young Women’s Institute, Accounting Explore-Versity is an effort to recruit more diverse students to Kelley.
Last spring, Kelley hosted the inaugural Accounting Explore-Versity conference. We welcomed 15 underrepresented minority undergraduate students to Bloomington and introduced them to our top-ranked MS in Accounting program. Current student Tyrek Camper explains, “The Explore-Versity event attracted students from across the country and showcased the distinct advantages of Kelley’s Graduate Accounting Programs—particularly the MSA program. From the great networking opportunities and professional workshops to exploring the beautiful campus, students experienced a small glimpse of life as a Kelley student.”
One of Accounting Explore-Versity’s strengths is the high level of engagement between top accounting firms and students. Students improved their interviewing skills, refined their resumes, and learned professional skills from representatives from our corporate partners Deloitte, PwC, EY, Grant Thornton, and KPMG. In addition, speakers from these firms discussed the benefits of an inclusive and diverse workplace. As attendee Sandra Gonzalez Guiterrez remarked, the “message was clear,” that these firms value “the importance of individuality and open-mindedness.”
In April, Kelley is proud to offer Accounting Explore-Versity for a second year. This year, Kelley warmly welcomes back the support of its inaugural corporate partners and is excited to announce that McGladrey will join their ranks. Thanks to the support provided by these corporate partners, Kelley can continue to develop new programs and attract top diverse talent to Kelley.
We welcome your interest in helping Kelley reach our diversity goals and partnering with us on any of our outreach programs.
