Admissions, Applications, and Deadlines

 1. When I apply, does it matter which application deadline I choose?

You should apply whenever you believe your application is strongest—it’s better to meet a later deadline with a strong application than to rush to meet an early deadline. We offer four deadlines: Oct. 15, Jan. 5, March 1, and April 15. While we will have seats available through all of the deadlines, if you are interested in merit-based financial aid you should apply by no later than Jan. 5 for best financial aid consideration. International applicants should also apply by Jan. 5 due to the additional time it takes to secure a student visa.

 2. Does the Kelley Full-time MBA Program offer spring admission?

No, we only offer fall admission.

 3. I applied for admission in a previous year and was denied. What is the reapplication process?

If you applied in the past year, do not complete a new online application. You can simply send us a letter prior to any deadline asking that we reconsider your application. In your letter, outline your professional and academic accomplishments since your last application and submit an updated resume. Arrange for official copies of any new test scores or academic records to be sent to us. Feel free to submit new references or essays if you choose, but this is not required. You do not need to pay a new application fee. Your reapplication materials can be sent via email and email attachments to iumba [at] indiana [dot] edu.

Note: If you applied more than one year ago, you will need to complete the entire application process again.

 4. How do I apply for scholarships or graduate assistantships?

All students offered admission to the MBA Program are automatically considered for merit-based aid offered by the Kelley School of Business; there is no additional application to complete. While some awards are in the form of scholarships and fellowships, others are in the form of graduate assistantships. Awards go to the strongest candidates offered admission—no particular test scores or GPA guarantees aid, we consider many factors. Awards range in value from approximately $5,000 to full tuition.

 5. Are admission interviews required?

While admission interviews are not required, you are welcome to schedule an interview as a part of the admission process. We offer interviews on the Bloomington campus and at MBA fairs held across the United States and abroad in the fall. Once you submit your application, interviews are available by invitation only. If you are invited to interview, you may be able to interview by Skype or phone—Skype or phone interviews are not available to candidates who have not yet applied. We do not offer alumni interviews; all interviews are conducted by members of the admissions committee.

Test Scores

 6. If I provide my GMAT score (or GPA or resume), can you tell me my admission or financial aid chances?

No. We consider many factors in the admissions and financial aid selection process, so we can't predict your chances without reviewing your complete application. To benchmark your statistics against current Kelley MBA students you can review our class profile.

 7. Do you accept the GRE instead of the GMAT

Yes, you may submit valid results of either the GMAT or the GRE. Your scores should demonstrate a balance between verbal and quantitative skills. If you've taken the exams more than once, don't worry—we'll consider your highest scores.

 8. What is the minimum required GMAT score?

There is no minimum required score, but the average is over 660. A lower score may be compensated for by strength in other aspects of your application. GMAT scores are valid for five years.

 9. I've taken the GMAT or GRE more than once—what score will the committee use?

If you’ve taken the GMAT or GRE more than once, your highest score will be used when evaluating your application.

 10. I need to have my official GMAT score report sent to Kelley. What is your school code?

The code for the Full-time MBA Program at Indiana University Bloomington is 8ZG-41-37. Visit www.mba.com to learn how to have your official score reports sent.

 11. I need to have my official GRE score report sent to Kelley. What is your school code?

The code for Indiana University, Bloomington is 1324. Visit www.ets.org/gre to learn how to have your official score reports sent.

Transfer Students

 12. If I am enrolled in another MBA program can I transfer to Kelley?

We do not accept transfer students. If you’ve started an MBA program at another university, you are welcome to apply, but you will need to complete our full two year program if offered admission. You can petition to have six credit hours or fewer transferred, but those credits only apply to electives and must be approved by the director of Graduate Student Services.

International Students

 13. Do you accept the IELTS instead of the TOEFL?

Yes. We require all international students whose native language is not English to submit valid results from either the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). This requirement is waived for international candidates who have earned a college or university degree in the U.S.

 14. My native language is not English, but most of my college courses were taught in English. Do I still need to take the TOEFL or IELTS?

Yes, we require the TOEFL or IELTS of all international applicants whose native language is not English, regardless of the language of instruction throughout their education. We only grant an exception to this if you have completed a college or university degree in the U.S.

 15. What are the minimum required TOEFL, and IELTS scores?

We have a minimum required TOEFL score of 100 on the internet-based test. If you take the IELTS instead of TOEFL, we require a minimum score of band 7.0.

 16. I need to have my official TOEFL score report sent to Indiana University. What is your school and department code?

The institution code of Indiana University is 1324, and the department code is 02. Visit TOEFL.org to learn how to have your official score reports sent.

 17. I have a 3-year bachelor's degree from India. Am I eligible to apply?

We require students to have the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree, which usually follows 16 years of education. Students educated in India are expected to complete the Part 1 exams of a university master's degree following a 3-year bachelor's degree to be eligible for graduate consideration.

Post-graduate diploma programs offered by universities are also acceptable if a 3-year bachelor's degree is required for admission.

Professional programs offered by external agencies, organizations or non-university groups are not acceptable.

 18. As an international applicant, do I need to submit evidence of financial support with my admission application?

No—you can wait and submit financial support documentation after you receive your admission decision from the Kelley School. Indiana University, however, cannot complete your visa documentation (the I-20) until they have received proof of adequate financial support.

Requirements and Prerequisites

 19. Does Kelley require work experience?

While we don't require work experience, it is rare to be offered admission without it. We like to see students with at least two years of full-time, post-undergraduate work experience. On average, our MBA students have five years of full-time experience. Most students find their MBA experience far richer and their post-MBA career options far greater if they have a base of professional work experience to build on as they move through the program.

 20. Is calculus required? Are there any other prerequisites?

While calculus is not required for admission, an understanding of analytical thinking and quantitative tools has a significant influence on your success in the program. We expect you to be competent in algebra, comfortable with the use of spreadsheets, and have a basic knowledge of statistics, but there are no prerequisites. Students from all academic backgrounds are welcome to apply.

 21. Should I take any particular courses to prepare for the MBA?

While we have no prerequisites for enrollment, if you have a limited quantitative background you may benefit from taking accounting and business statistics in advance of enrollment. Becoming comfortable with Excel would also be valuable. In addition, the MBA Program offers Jump Start courses prior to orientation which provide brief overviews of accounting, business analytics/Excel, and finance.

 22. Once enrolled, is it possible to be waived out of any required core courses?

No, you cannot be waived out of any components of the MBA core, even if you have extensive academic or professional experience in the area. Our curriculum, along with our team structure, capitalizes on the different expertise of each student.

Residency

 23. Is it possible to become an Indiana resident for the second year of the program?

Only if you meet certain requirements. Indiana residency for tuition purposes is determined by the Office of the Registrar. Typically, you must be a resident of Indiana for the 12 months prior to enrollment, working full time, and not here for the purpose of being a student before you can be declared an Indiana resident. Specific questions should be directed to registrar [at] indiana [dot] edu or (812) 855-2464.
