Service Operations Management
- 15-weeks
- 3 credits
- Prerequisite: None
As economies in industrialized nations across the world have become more service oriented, so has the importance of studying and understanding all aspects of service management. To illustrate, consider the following. The number of United States workers employed in the service sector has gone from 3 out of 10 in the early 1900s, to 5 out of 10 in 1950, to approximately 8 out of 10 today. Other trends such as web connectivity anywhere/anytime, a variety of e-business developments, and the resulting widespread availability of data are providing exciting opportunities and challenges for managing the service sector. Clearly, services play a key role in today’s economy and can be expected to continue to do so into the future. Therefore, in this seminar we will study service management, with an emphasis on operations management issues and decision making methods. Specifically, we will focus on approaches for more efficiently designing and managing the operations of service sector industries.
