R. David Hoover is chairman of Ball Corporation.

Mr. Hoover joined Ball Corporation in 1970 as assistant to the treasurer. He served in various corporate planning and development and finance positions until 1980 when he relocated to Colorado and became director and later vice president, finance and administration, of the company’s agricultural systems division. In 1985 he was named vice president, finance and administration, of the company’s aerospace systems group. He returned to the former Muncie, Ind., corporate headquarters in 1987 as assistant treasurer and was elected vice president and treasurer in 1988 and senior vice president and chief financial officer in 1992. He was named executive vice president and elected to the company’s board of directors in 1996. In 1998 he was elected vice chairman and given strategic responsibility for Ball’s aerospace subsidiary, Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., in addition to the role of chief financial officer.

Mr. Hoover became president and chief financial officer of Ball Corporation on Jan. 1, 2000, and was named president and chief operating officer in April of that same year. He was elected president and chief executive officer in January 2001. On April 24, 2002, he was elected chairman of the board. He served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer from Jan. 1, 2010, to Jan. 26, 2011, when he retired as CEO.

Prior to his career with Ball, Mr. Hoover was a corporate financial analyst for Eli Lilly & Co., Indianapolis.

Mr. Hoover serves on the boards of Ball Corporation, Eli Lilly and Company, Energizer Holdings, Inc., and Qwest Communications International, Inc. He is a member of the board of the National Association of Manufacturers and is a member and past chair of the board of governors of the Can Manufacturers Institute. Mr. Hoover is a member and past chair of the board of trustees of DePauw University and on the Indiana University Kelley School of Business Dean’s Council. He is also a director of Boulder Community Hospital and a member of the Colorado Forum.

Born June 21, 1945, in Straughn, Ind., Mr. Hoover received a bachelor’s degree in economics from DePauw University, Greencastle, Ind., in 1967. He was awarded an MBA in finance and real estate from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1970, and completed the Advanced Management Program of the Harvard University Graduate School of Business, Boston, in 1988.
