Carlisle Helps MBAs Develop International Business Acumen - 04/02/2013

Carlisle Helps MBAs Develop International Business Acumen

Carlisle Companies Incorporated has a long and proud history which began in 1917, when Charles S. Moomy opened Carlisle Tire and Rubber Company in Carlisle, Pennsylvania to sell inner tubes to Montgomery Ward and Company. With thirty employees, Carlisle Tire and Rubber Company began producing automobile inner tubes.

Today, Carlisle Companies Incorporated is a global diversified company that designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of products that serve a broad range of niche markets including commercial roofing, energy, agriculture, lawn and garden, mining and construction equipment, aerospace and electronics, dining and food delivery, and healthcare. Through a group of decentralized operating companies led by entrepreneurial management teams, Carlisle brings innovative product solutions to solve the challenges customers face. With nearly 12,000 employees worldwide, who generated $3.6 billion in net sales in 2012, the company is focused on continuously improving the value of the Carlisle brand by developing the best products, ensuring the highest quality and providing unequaled customer service in the many industries they serve. Carlisle is made up of five business segments: Carlisle Construction Materials, Carlisle Brake & Friction, Carlisle Transportation Products, Carlisle Interconnect Technologies, and Carlisle FoodService.

Carlisle Companies Board of Directors appointed David A. Roberts, (MBA '78) Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer in 2007. Mr. Roberts serves on the Kelley School of Business Dean’s Council, is a Life Member of the IUAA, and is responsible for Carlisle’s support of the Kelley School. Carlisle has partnered with the MBA Business Marketing Academy (BMA) since 2009. “Our business has grown rapidly over the past decade and as we prepare for similar growth in the years to come, we will need highly skilled managers to lead the company. We have found that the quality of the graduates coming out of the Kelley program have the skills and experience that we can further hone as they prepare to lead Carlisle into the future”, says Dave Roberts.

Carlisle’s support for the BMA has provided a number of experiential learning opportunities for Kelley MBAs. One of the unique opportunities Carlisle supported was a Brazil consulting project, where the entire Academy traveled to San Paulo and completed a Brazilian market analysis. Opportunities like these help Kelley students develop international business acumen and set them apart from their peers at other institutions. According to Academy Director Fred Roedl, “Carlisle and, specifically, Dave Roberts have played a significant role in the success of the Business Marketing Academy over the past five years. In addition to being a major financial sponsor for Academy activities, Carlisle has recruited BMA students for both full time and internship positions and provided many meaningful consulting projects, from which students gain valuable business experience. Several Kelley/BMA graduates have been promoted within Carlisle to positions of key managerial responsibility. I am also personally grateful to Dave for his generosity in taking the time to travel to Bloomington and speak to students within the classroom. Carlisle is a true partner with the MBA Business Marketing Academy in every sense of the word.”
