Smartphone Support Policies

The only smartphone that Technology Operations & Services is prepared to support is the BlackBerry, primarily because IU has established a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) to facilitate Exchange/Outlook email and UITS has established a BlackBerry support model.

Note: UITS has announced plans to retire the BES no later than January 1, 2015.  Beginning January 1, 2013, UITS will no longer create new BES accounts.  New BlackBerry 10 devices will begin utilizing ActiveSync sometime in early 2013.

For all other brands & types of smartphones, Technology Operations & Services personnel will provide a “best guess” resolution; this “best guess” will be based on prior experience with other brands and software packages, though no guarantee can be made as to the success of the installation or configuration of non standard (i.e. non-BlackBerry) equipment.  Support of non-BlackBerry devices is strictly “at your risk.”  In addition, TOS will attempt to configure the smartphone to synchronize (via ActiveSync, etc.) with IU's Exchange environment.


  • TOS cannot guarantee that no data will be lost or duplicated during the attempt
  • TOS personnel are not able to assist users with their smartphone cellular phone service. Cellular service and support should be acquired through IU Telephone Services if users are interested in the IU discount.
  • End users are responsible for providing all installation materials (i.e. CD’s, instruction manuals, etc)
  • TOS will not attempt to install smartphone and software equipment that is no longer supported by the manufacturer.

We will strive to do no harm in these situations, although as noted above, lack of prior exposure to specific devices and software packages severely limits our ability to “get it right the first time,” as such users should be aware before purchasing a smartphone that they may need to look elsewhere for support (the vendor, the manufacturer, UITS, etc).

Technology Operations & Services support for smartphones is limited to KSB faculty and staff - TOS does not support student smartphones.
