Media Advisory: IU students in areas of health, technology, aging pitch business ideas

Students in Indiana University Bloomington's new "Health, Technology and Aging" course will make a pitch on Monday (Dec. 3) to judges and an "angel" for funding that could turn their class projects into marketable products.
Reporters are welcome to attend the students' business plan presentations, Monday, 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Kelley School of Business, graduate building, room 3059 on the third floor, in Bloomington. The judges' results will be available the same day.
The course, developed with funding from the IU Kelley School of Business' Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, brings together students from the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, the School of Nursing and the School of Informatics. The four teams, each with students representing the three schools, developed business plans for new technologies to support the health and independence of older adults. Some of the plans involve RFID technology, special sensors and interactive touch screen technology to help with nutritional needs.
"This is where Microsoft was born; this is where Google was born -- college students with great ideas," said Lesa Lorenzen-Huber, clinical assistant professor in HPER's Department of Applied Health Science. "Our young people have the ability to imagine without the restraints that older people sometimes put on their brainstorming ideas, the "yeah, buts."
Lorenzen-Huber developed the course, which will be offered each fall.
Judges include a venture capitalist and experts from the Kelley School of Business, inVenture, School of Informatics and School of Library and Information Science.
