Practitioners, researchers and students to present at business analytics forum at IU's Kelley School

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The inaugural forum on business analytics will be hosted by Indiana University's Kelley School of Business on April 11 and 12 to spotlight the opportunities and challenges in applying business analytics in organizations.
The conference, "Today's Applications, Tomorrow's Vision," will feature breakout sessions, discussion panels and presentations by executives such as Michael Chui, principal of McKinsey & Co., and Forrest Danson, U.S. Deloitte Analytics lead at Deloitte Consulting.
The forum will be preceded by a Data Analytics Competition on April 11, in which teams of five Kelley School of Business MBA and Master of Information Systems students compete for cash prizes. The case will challenge graduate students to develop a predictive model for a real business situation involving more than 100,000 observations, with winners receiving awards of $5,000 for first place, $2,500 for second place and $1,000 for third place.
Both events will take place in the Godfrey Executive Education Center, 1275 E. 10th St.
"People attending this event will have the opportunity to hear from a number of experienced industry executives and Kelley faculty about how business analytics can be used to shape and inform a wide variety of business decisions," said Frank Acito, Max Barney Faculty Fellow, professor of marketing and co-director of the Institute for Business Analytics. "Organizations of all types need people who not only can collect, synthesize and analyze data, but also present and make sense out of it for optimization of goals. The IBA and this forum will delve into these very concepts."
Michael Chui will make the kick-off presentation on "Big data and advanced analytics: The next frontier for innovation, competition and productivity."
This will be followed by four breakout discussion groups that cover specific analytics areas: marketing; finance and accounting; health care; and supply chain. Practitioners from dunnhumby, Booz Allen Hamilton, Federal Express and StoneTurn Group LLP will lead these sessions.
A discussion panel featuring faculty with expertise in advanced analytics techniques will follow; panelists include:
- Raymond R. Burke, professor of marketing, the E.W. Kelley Chair of Business Administration and director of the Customer Interface Laboratory at the Kelley School.
- Kyle Cattani, associate professor of operations management and the the W.W. Grainger Inc. Faculty Fellow at the Kelley School.
- Scott Dorsey, co-founder and CEO, ExactTarget.
- Brent Meyers, vice president, Federal Express.
- Dion Rudnicki, vice president, business development-government and education, IBM.
- Mark Zozulia, information management regional service line leader, Deloitte Consulting.
The panel will be moderated by Bradley C. Wheeler, IU vice president for information technology and chief information officer and professor of information systems in the Kelley School.
"IU is deeply engaged in the enormous role that Big Data are playing from the leading edge of science and medicine to consumer insights and new approaches to business," Wheeler said. "The experts on this panel will provide extremely contemporary insights on the state of the art and what comes next."
Closing remarks and the announcement of the data analytics competition winners will be made by Idalene Kesner, interim dean of the Kelley School of Business and Frank P. Popoff Chair of Strategic Management.
