“I was very interested in the GLOBASE Program. Having a real-world impact on people’s lives, helping them improve their lives with my business knowledge—it’s been very satisfying and it’s been part of my career from the start.”
Work directly with entrepreneurs and nonprofits in emerging economies in Latin America, Africa, and India, tackling today’s business challenges through the Global Business and Social Enterprise Program (GLOBASE). Students direct GLOBASE, equipped with tools and strategies for their team’s success.
You’ll meet your client on campus, learning about their history, challenges, and long-term goals. After preparing for seven weeks—developing a deep understanding of your client’s local business culture, focused project management, and how to find solutions while working in an environment you’ve never experienced before—you’ll head out for a two-week post in your client’s home country. You’ll get an in-depth understanding of the client’s business operation, meeting vendors and customers, then present your business solution to your client and local leaders.
When the project is complete, you’ll have earned more than credit hours—you’ll have leadership experience on an international project with the potential to change people’s lives forever.
As part of a student leadership team, you’ll start your Emerging Markets Experience (EME) with a single question—anything from investigating how Indonesia balances sustainability with rapid economic expansion to how South Africa drives the economy of an entire continent.
Working with a faculty member, your team will develop a curriculum designed to answer your business question, prepare for another culture and language, and plan a 10-day itinerary to the nation you are studying. There, you’ll explore the real-world implications of your international business topic through the eyes of the leaders and companies on the front line.
Previous EME programs have traveled to:
- Brazil
- Chile
- China
- Cuba
- Czech Republic
- Indonesia
- South Africa
This program is open to first- and second-year students, with second-year students serving as EME program leaders.

“Studying abroad has allowed me to experience day-to-day life in Hong Kong and take courses specifically focused on Asia.”
Gain meaningful international experience by studying abroad through one of our exchange partner schools—many of which offer graduate-level business courses in English.
All Kelley MBA students who want to participate in an overseas study program must apply through the MBA Program office. Applications are typically due in March during the first year of study, with selections made before the end of the semester. Each exchange institution has a limited number of spaces available to Kelley MBA students and applicants cannot be guaranteed selection.
In addition to your application, you will need to submit a one page resume and a personal statement. Contact Gale Nichols, ggnichol [at] indiana [dot] edu, director of Graduate Student Services, at (812) 855-8006 for application materials.
Costs and expenses vary by exchange program. You won’t have to pay tuition at the partner school, that’s covered through your MBA tuition. But, you will have to cover your transportation, housing, books, food, and living expenses abroad.
Additional financial aid may be available if you can demonstrate a greater financial need due to participation in an overseas study program. For more information, contact Tim Smith, smithtim [at] indiana [dot] edu, senior associate director of Admissions and Financial Aid.
If you are selected to participate in an overseas study program, you will register for BUS X530, a variable credit hour course tailored to your remaining degree requirements and course enrollment while on exchange. Grades from courses taken overseas will be combined to create one grade for BUS X530.
You should meet with Gale Nichols, ggnichol [at] indiana [dot] edu, director of Graduate Student Services, to determine the appropriate credit hour designation in X530 prior to leaving for your overseas study destination.
