Course Planning and Development
If you are interested in designing a new course or revising an existing one, the annual summer Course Development Institute is just the ticket for you. Working with a cohort of colleagues, you will use the principles of backward course design to create your new course, all the while learning a good deal about learner-centered pedagogy and experiencing teaching techniques you can use in the classroom.
If the summer institute falls at a time that you cannot attend, I am happy to meet with you one-on-one to guide you through the process of designing your course with clearly articulated learning goals at the center of our work. This method of course design promotes student learning as the focus of the course rather than coverage of content. It also most effectively brings student goals (to earn a high grade) into alignment with your goals (student learning). To arrange a course development consultation, contact Eric Metzler to set up an appointment.
If you are new to the college classroom, have a look at the Syllabus Development Self Tutorial. The tutorial last about one hour and will lead you through some of the basics about building your syllabus and college teaching.
