Planning and developing a course, whether to design a new course or to reinvigorate an existing one, can be a daunting task. So much must be taken into consideration: How well will students be prepared? At what pace should the course proceed? What methods will best suit the content? What kinds of assignments will be appropriate? How about technology? Our best advice: Don't do it alone! I will meet with you once, several times, or on an on-going basis to help you develop and plan your course in a systematic, step-by-step manner. The method I use, "assignment driven course development," is a way of designing courses based above all on the instructor's learning goals. Hence, I always begin our course development consultations with an informal learning goals inventory so that both you and I are clear about the specific learning goals you wish students to reach by the end of the semester. From here, I will help you develop assignments, projects, and examinations that address those goals and then innovative ways for you to help your students acquire the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in your class. The last step entails scheduling course content so that students will learn the material they must use to complete their assignments successfully.
While this approach to course development will seem backward and counter intuitive to the uninitiated, it is strongly supported by research in teaching and learning and has been enthusiastically embraced by all who have used it. This method ensures that student learning will be maintained as the main goal of the course instead of the impulse to "cover" a textbook or body of knowledge. It also most effectively brings student goals (to earn a high grade) into alignment with your goals (student learning).
