The Fast Track to an Accounting Career

“Kelley and GAP taught me how to work hard … The expectations at Kelley are way above the expectations at any job. With that said, simply continuing the same work ethic can yield great performance results at work.”
When Jim Azriel considered his college options, he wanted two things: a major based on his interests and a career with opportunities for rapid advancement. Azriel found what he was searching for with a Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) degree through Graduate Accounting Programs at the Kelley School of Business.
“I had always found myself enjoying math,” says Azriel, whose experience as a Kelley undergrad led to his continuing at Kelley for his MSA. “I knew the quality of education I received as an undergraduate—the professors, the program, and the environment of the entire university attracted me to attend IU.”
Plus, Kelley’s intensive one-year MSA degree gave Azriel’s fast-track plan a jump start. Tailored for those with an undergraduate business degree, the MSA offers real-world experience in a technical accounting curriculum. Students are prepared for great jobs after graduation—those earning MSA degrees have an almost 100 percent placement rate.
“I’m currently working at Ernst & Young within the assurance/audit practice,” Azriel says. Based in Chicago, Azriel got his job during his fall semester in the MSA program. But, his great job and a great college experience didn’t come without challenges.
“Kelley and GAP taught me how to work hard,” Azriel says. “I especially remember Professor Dave Greene because he was tough but also a great career instructor. He challenged everyone in class and out of class. I did not particularly like his methods as a student, but I’ve since reflected and realized how vital a role he filled in the program. He was a preparer for the real world and I definitely look back and appreciate what he did.”
High Expectations Lead to Success
In fact, the expectations at Kelley may just exceed those demanded in students’ careers.
“The expectations at Kelley are way above the expectations at any job,” Azriel says. “With that said, simply continuing the same work ethic can yield great performance results at work.”
But Azriel’s Kelley experience wasn’t all about work.
“My Kelley experience includes the friendships I made both through class and networking,” Azriel says. “Since Kelley is a world-class institution, it provides so many rich opportunities. My advice to prospective students would be never miss an opportunity.”
