Target Excellence in Business Leadership Program

Leadership skills are always valuable, whether you’re working in retailing—where you might oversee a category of products, a division of stores, or an entire corporation—or another area of business. Employers want to hire students who have proven leadership potential.

To ensure that all Kelley students receive leadership training, the Center for Education and Research in Retailing facilitated a generous grant from Target to establish the Target Excellence in Business Leadership Program. This program provides an organized framework to help all Kelley undergraduate students develop, hone, and highlight their leadership skills while documenting their progress.

The program includes:

  • A leadership plan process for each student, which kicks off with an I-Core event and extends throughout the remainder of the student’s time at Kelley. Students completing the program will have a leadership portfolio to document leadership experiences in their courses, service-learning activities, and other elements of their Kelley education. They can also use the portfolio as a resource in their career search.
  • Speakers from Target and other public and private organizations who share their insights on leadership with Kelley students.
  • K-Lead, a managerial skills assessment in the Z302 Managing Behavior in Organizations course that includes two filmed exercises and an electronic “in-basket” exercise. Students receive customized assessments that evaluate their performance on a number of skill dimensions, highlighting their strengths and developmental needs and forming the basis for a personal development plan.
  • Leadership coaches who counsel students on personal leadership development plans and strategies throughout their time at Kelley.
